The first printings of four of Caldecott’s popular ‘Picture Books’, which were much-reprinted into the 20th century. The first one here illustrates a poem by Oliver Goldsmith.

Edinburgh: Printed by J. Robertson, 1782. 8vo, pp. [2], 179 (i.e. 193), [1]. Nineteenth-century half pebbled green roan, marbled boards, spine lettered in gilt, marbled endpapers. Lightly soiled and spotted. Joints rubbed, boards darkened in places. Bookplate of J.A. Jamieson and armorial bookplate of John Whitefoord Mackenzie. The prolific plagiarist John Callander (1721-1789) published numerous works, most with their own particular flaws: his annotations on Paradise Lost were partially taken from another edition; his translation of Paul to the Ephesians strictly retained the Greek word order, making it incomprehensible; this edition of poems traditionally ascribed to James the Fifth, printed in part to explicate the older dialect, ‘included helpful notes for those unfamiliar with the Scottish language, but many of Callander's etymological remarks have been considered unsound’ (ODNB). Original green pebbled cloth, printed paper label to front board. Faint foxing to plates, margins toned, one plate cut a little close at fore-edge. Some spotting, particularly to textblock edge. Spine-ends a little bumped, dustjacket soiled, torn and chipped with small losses at ends of spine panel. Signed to half-title ‘Dugald Campbell, 1934, Arbroath’, ‘the author’ in ink above. A work by Scottish missionary, amateur ethnologist and fellow of the Royal Geographical Society Dugald Campbell. It contains chapters on ‘Bantuland and Bantu Languages’, ‘Cannibalism, slavery, and Congo horrors’ and ‘Witchcraft and cruelties’. Rare in dustjacket.

London: Printed for the author, and sold ey [sic] Edwards, in Pall-Mall; also by Edwards’s, in Halifax, 1788. FIRST EDITION, 8vo issue, pp. iv, 30, [25 leaves], 12, [25 leaves]. The unnumbered leaves each containing an etching printed in sepia above letterpress text. Contemporary tree calf, spine divided by raised bands between gilt rules, red morocco label. A few minor spots. Spine a little creased, the merest touch of rubbing to extremities, residue from a removed label to front pastedown. Also published as a quarto and in several versions with variation of setting and etching - the latter usually printed in black rather than the sepia here, and sometimes on India paper instead of directly onto the sheet. Edinburgh, 1858. Manuscript written in ink on paper, 171 x 94 mm, ff. 18. Modern plain grey boards. Outside blanks toned. An attractively written manuscript by James Cargill (fl. 1830-1880), a writing master who seems to have been somewhat itinerant - other surviving volumes of his work give his location as Leith or Perth, while this one was done in Edinburgh. The texts are not original, but are presented unattributed - the volume opens with Charles Wesley’s ‘The Final Conflagration’, here titled ‘The Hope of the Righteous’; Cargill also transcribes Hogg’s ‘Skylark’ and Reginald Heber’s ‘Farewell’, among other shorter works. Cargill rotates through various alphabets, and different levels of decorative titles, along with various head- and tail-piece curls; the title-page and ‘Finis’ are particularly finely worked.

Alexander Carlyle (1722-1805) was Moderator of the Church of Scotland in 1770 and a witness to the 1745 battle of Prestonpans. Although first published in 1860 it was written nearly a century earlier, covering events to the year 1770. It proved popular, reprinting within the year and reaching a third edition in 1861.

Although first published in 1860 this autobiography was written nearly a century earlier, covering events to the year 1770. It proved popular, reprinting within the year and reaching a third edition in 1861. Scarce in the original cloth.

The first printing of the first two volumes of Alexander Carmichael’s (1832-1912) magnum opus, which eventually grew to encompass 6 volumes over the following 7 decades. After turning down offers from publishers Carmichael, having collected and translated the material, published it himself in this lavish limited-edition set; it was not reissued until 1928, lightly edited by his daughter Ella. Edges of wrappers chipped and creased, some small losses to spine, sometime neatly repaired with glue. A few faint pencil marks. The first edition of the third pamphlet in a series published with the Labour Press by socialist writer and early gay activist Edward Carpenter (1844-1929). The first three titles, ‘Sex-Love, and its Place in a Free Society’, ‘Woman, and her Place in a Free Society’, and this one, were all published for public circulation, while the fourth, ’Homogenic Love, and its Place in a Free Society’ was privately distributed. Bassano: Nella Tipografia Remondiniana, 1805. 2 vols. bound as 1, 12mo, pp. [xii], 297, [3], 317, [1]. Contemporary half vellum, marbled boards, spine divided by gilt rolls and rules, black morocco label, other compartments tooled centrally in gilt. Scattered foxing and spotting, a few ink blots. Rubbed and worn, spine darkened. Bookplate of R.M. Beverley to pastedown, small paper shelf label and ink numeral 6 to spine. A dual-language Latin-Italian edition of the work of three classical lyric poets printed by the Remondini family firm. Library Hub records only the BL in the UK, Worldcat adds 7 Italian institutions and UCLA. This copy belonged to poet and polemicist Robert Mackenzie Beverley (1798-1868), author of several pamphlets on corruption in the Church of England and an 1867 book arguing passionately against Darwin’s theory of evolution.

London: Printed for J. Johnson [et al], 1805. 8vo, pp. xxiv, 463, [3, ads] + folding table. Contemporary unlettered sheep, spine divided by raised bands, blind rolls to boards at spine edge. Table folded slightly proud and soiled to edges. A little marked, somewhat rubbed, head of spine worn. Ownership inscripton of Miss M. Medhurst dated August 12th 1810 to front flyleaf, pencil sketch of youth to rear flyleaf. An unsophisticated copy of this French grammar by Lewis Chambaud (d. 1776), a London-resident French language teacher and writer, was first published in 1750 and here is revised by another expatriate Frenchman, the London-based translator and grammarian Jean-Thomas Hérissant des Carrières (1742-1820). None of the many editions are plentiful in institutional holdings, with this 14th recorded in just 3 by Library Hub: BL, Leeds and Cambridge.

London: Printed for F. Wingrave, 1814. 12mo, pp. 262, [2, ads]. Contemporary sheep, boards dyed black, spine divided by gilt rules, red morocco label, other compartments tooled centrally in gilt, marbled edges and endpapers. A touch toned, one leaf with an internal tear touching text without loss. A little rubbed, head of spine defective. Ownership inscription of H. Musgrave to flyleaf dated Oct. 1833. A rare reprint of Chambaud’s phrasebook, aimed at the expatriate French market, and first published in 1751. All editions are institutionally scarce, with this 1814 printing being recorded in Worldcat in the State Library of South Australia only.

Edinburgh: William and Robert Chambers, 1836. FIRST EDITION, 8vo, pp. [vi], ii, 334, [2, ads]. Contemporary ecru sailcloth, edges sprinkled red. A little foxed. Boards somewhat soiled, patch of damage to rear board at fore-edge. Blind-stamp of Trinity Episcopal School to flyleaf, half-title and a few internal pages. The first edition of Chambers’ educational book of short biographies of worthy figures with a Scottish bent to its contents, finding room for James Watt and Thomas Telford alongside Columbus, Franklin and Washington. It was published as part of ‘Chambers’s Educational Course’, reprinted in 1838 and again in 1873. This copy survives in a rude but not undignified sailcloth binding.

Glasgow: Sold Wholesale by J. Lumsden and Son, 1815. 24mo, pp. 47, [1]. 8 leaves of plates printed in sanguine included within pagination. Original salmon paper wrappers pasted to first and last leaves as issued, front wrapper lettered in ink. Wrappers somewhat soiled. An attractive religious chapbook, an unusual survival in original paper wrappers, with 16 illustrations printed in red. The BL’s catalogue entry (alone among the several holdings in Library Hub) says the illustrations are attributed to Thomas Bewick - this is doubtful although his workshop did produce blocks for Lumsden’s chapbooks around this time.
