Calverton (1900-1940) was a literary critic and founder of the Modern Quarterly a left leaning periodical and a publishing vehicle for African-American intellectuals. First edition, inscribed by the illustrator Randolph Caldecott to Frederick Green, dated 19 March 1878.  Lively travel book, the theme of which is the political, geographical, social, pontifical and poetical aspects of Italian life, characteristics which make Italy such a wonderful country to visit.  Alice Carr's is a book of memory, happy times among happy people, written  to bring to life her journey throughout the Riviera region and the Apennines.  The illustrations by Caldecott perfectly capture the tone of Carr's work and reinforce her focus on the common elements of everyday life in northern Italy. .

The feast of St. John the Baptist is one of two sacred days of remembrance established by the Grand Lodge in the early 18th century.  St. John was considered the patron saint of carpenters and masons, and this is commemorated every year during the last week of June.  The ceremony begins with an organ recital by Miss S. Autograph letter of introduction for two burgeoning artists to Christopher Pearse Cranch requesting that he examine the portfolios of the two artists. "Let me make you acquainted with two of our young Rondout artists-Mr. Inboy (?) and Mr. McEntee--who are to pass the winter in New York, and who have taken a room next door to yours."  Channing goes on to say that they have spent the summer in the Adirondacks and have "portfolios filled with spirited sketches" for Cranch to criticize. Orig. printed wrappers; some light soling and minor wear; sound and attractive copy.   Scarce genealogy of a pioneering family in Illinois.  The family hailed from New Hampshire. The plates include a coat of arms, three finely rendered views (after photographs?) of the "family mansion" and two other homesteads in New Hampshire, and an excellent group portrait of the compiler and five siblings: Jonas C.; Samuel P.; Ebenezer; Lewis C.; and Elizabeth. Julius B. Champney (b. 1811) immigrated to Illinois in 1855. At the time of the 1860 census he resides in Peru, southwest of Chicago and by 1870 had moved to Macoupin, Ill., northeast of St. Louis.   Ante-Fire Imprints 1139. Sabin 11846.

Manuscript on paper.  Small 4to.  205 x 155 mm. 8 x 6 ¼  inches.  96 pp., plus initial and final blanks.  Written in ink on good quality laid paper.  Bound in full contemporary calf, all edges gilt; a few minor marks and stains to the paper stock, otherwise very good condition.                                               An inscription reading "Therese Comtessa de Christalnigg, 1757" appears on the front pastedown and the book label of Oskar Göshen, dated 1865. A beautifully written and carefully crafted manuscript volume, written in a very neat and legible hand, containing the conjugation of Italian verbs and rules of grammar.  The manuscript was written by the Countess of Christalnigg in the mid-18th century and reflects educational practices of noble women in the 18th century.  The Countess Theresa's home was at the Palais Christalnigg in Klagenfurt, Carinthia, about 40 miles from the Italian border.  The opening page… Read More

Record book of the  minutes from the quarterly conferences of the Methodist Circuit of Warrior's Mark, Pennsylvania. The notes record the officers of the conference, which include a president and a secretary. It seems that the post of conference president was always filled by a senior reverend of the circuit, while the secretary regularly rotated among the membership.  Each meeting began by addressing the following items of business: Objections or complaints to recent business of the circuit: Appeals to decisions made at the last quarterly conference:  Applications or renewals of licenses to preach: and Report on the nine schools maintained by the court circuit.
