Calverton (1900-1940) was a literary critic and founder of the Modern Quarterly a left leaning periodical and a publishing vehicle for African-American intellectuals. Folio.  305 x 190 mm., [2 ¼ x 7 ¾ inches].  Manuscript in ink.  39 pp. Contemporary calf backed boards; war to paper covers and spine.  Text block with some browning and staining.  Legible. Record book of the  minutes from the quarterly conferences of the Methodist Circuit of Warrior's Mark, Pennsylvania. The notes record the officers of the conference, which include a president and a secretary. Small 8vo.  150 x 105 mm., [6 x 4 inches].  lxxvii, 574 pp.  Illustrated with 170 illustrations e 24 chromolithographic plates.  Bound in white printed and decorated boards; some spotting to the boards and light foxing to the preliminary leaves, otherwise sound and not unattractive.  Fourth edition, originally published in 1907.  Giuseppe Ciocca was a principle cookery author for the Hoepli series Manuali, which brought instruction on numerous domestic arts and crafts to newly arrived city dwellers from the Italian countryside.  Cicco was the author of this work on desserts as well a book on gelato and frozen ices and a book on making candy, caramels, fruit drops.  Il Paticciere contains 700 recipes, many illustrated.  The 24 chromolithographic plates illustrate the method and style for decorating cakes, pies, and other baked desserts.  According to Salvatori, his cookery books were prepared for the professional chef as well as the home cook.   He calls this… Read More
