Description:
Pen and ink illustration and calligraphy with onlaid silver gelatin photograph, on thin card, 420 x 200 mm (sheet); a few light marks around the upper edges, otherwise fine condition. A significant piece of ephemera from one of Melbourne's most famous dining establishments of the 1890s and early 1900s, the Vienna Café, which occupied the grand premises at 25 Collins Street East. The Australia Hotel was later built on the same site. This unique ""sign"" was probably created in-house on the occasion of a special banquet held at the Vienna Café, a private function for the 17 young men in the photograph. Note that each of them has a letter ""B"" for ""Besse"" displayed in his lapel.  ""Completed in Collins Street in 1939 to a Leslie M. Perrott design, the Australia Hotel replaced an existing hotel of that name which had been established on the site of the highly fashionable and popular Vienna Café Hotel (1890-1915), Gunsler's Café Hotel (1879-90), and the City Club Hotel established about 1872. Description:
Very large format albumen print photograph, 215 x 270 mm; dated in manuscript in negative lower left '1 Jan 1874'; the verso has a contemporary inscription in pencil 'No. 1' and a straight-line wet stamp in green ink whose lettering is unfortunately indecipherable; the print has three vertical folds, with a short tear at the bottom edge of the central fold; the photograph is preserved in the previous owner's archival mat, on which she wrote in pencil 'Nicholas Caire mount' - presumably, this is a reference to the remnants of a mount that must have perished. The scrubby, scarred landscape certainly makes it possible that this fabulous outdoor group portrait was taken somewhere on the Central Goldfields. Nicholas Caire was living and working in Sandhurst (Bendigo) at this time. There was a surprisingly large number of social events held in Bendigo on New Year's Day, 1874 - in fact, if truth be told, there was probably more entertainment on offer than there would be today. We believe the men in our… Read More

Description:
Albumen print photograph, 280 x 230 mm, laid down on its original album leaf of thin card, with a fully contemporary pencilled caption in French beneath the image: 'Splitters fall (partie du milieu) haute 200 pieds'; a strong print with good tonal range, slight yellowing at edges; in very good condition (tiny amount of loss at bottom right corner, probably pre-dating the mounting). The State Library of Victoria holds another copy of this view (PCLTAF ; 302 P.16; in identical format, titled Foot of Splitter's Falls), which it dates to 1879-1881. Description:
Albumen print photograph, 240 x 290 mm, laid down on its original album page (split card) with caption in ink beneath image 'Selectors Camp Gippsland'; a strong print with rich tones and excellent contrast; the detail is so sharp that the printed commercial labels on the tins of salmon in the men's temporary shelter can easily be read. This evocative image was taken by Melbourne photographer N. J. Caire in the foothills of the Yarra Ranges on Gippsland's western fringe. The National Library of Australia holds another example, contained in a late nineteenth-century travel album, which has a manuscript caption that identifies the location as Ferntree Gully.

London : Thames and Hudson Ltd, 2021. Quarto, 396 x 261 mm, cloth in slipcase, pp. 392, extensively illustrated. New copy. The authorized monograph on one of the most influential and respected artists of our time, written with the full co-operation of Baselitz himself. A prolific artist with a protean output, Georg Baselitz has rethought the conventions of a range of media, predominantly painting and sculpture, over the course of a career of some sixty years. Born in 1938, Baselitz was expelled from art school in East Berlin in 1956 for ‘socio-political immaturity’, and moved to the western half of the city. By the late 1950s, he had rejected the dominant tendencies of both sides of the country and his singular achievement was to reintroduce the figure, compromised and discredited though it was by both Nazism and Communism, into art. By drawing attention to art by ‘outsiders’, such as psychiatric patients, and invoking a Parisian model of existentialist art and literature, Baselitz proposed… Read More
