Champollion was the philologist who deciphered the Egyptian hieroglyphs and published his "Précis du système hiéroglyphique des anciens Égyptiens" (Precis of the hieroglyphic system of the ancient Egyptians) in 1824. This was the first correct translation of the hieroglyphs and the key to the Egyptian grammatical system. This rare two-volume set is the first major publication by the father of Egyptology, Jean-François Champollion (1790-1832). Champollion is the man who made the breakthrough discovery which enabled translation of the Egyptian hieroglyphs. There were 30 copies published in 1811, but this edition is the major publication of this work. Printed on laid paper, and bound in full calf. The title's English translation is "Egypt under the Pharaohs, or research on the geography, religion, language, scriptures and history of Egypt before the invasion of Cambyses". Published one year after the death of Lord Nelson. Bound in three quarter calf with marbled boards and marbled endpapers. Front board re-attached with binding tape. Size 8" x 5". Overall condition Good. All 7 plates present. Foxing is nearly entirely absent save for the very occasion spot. Tiny note in ink in old hand to margin of p.100, and stain to plate opposite page 100. One ¾" closed tear at margin on page 279. Faint stain p.296. Textblock in generally very good condition, with only very light toning.
