In his second attempt at the creation of murals for a public space (the first attempt, completed but never installed, was for the Four Seasons Restaurant in the Segram Building, New York City), Rothko donated five panels to Harvard in 1964 as decoration for the dining room at the Holyoke Center, the University's newly-constructed administration building. Almost immediately they began to deteriorate from the effects of sunlight and wear and tear. In 1979, long after the deteriation became irreversable, they were removed and placed in storage.
