Collins London nd [1943 or 1944]. First Edition. Softcover. Very Good/No Jacket. A rare Proof copy of Dahl's first work. Original plain brown wrappers. Contents appears to be the same as for the final published UK first except the endpapers (with the correct red and yellow illustrations) are included as four leaves (2 front and rear) rather than pasted to the hard covers. The last text leaf has some colouring in to the black and white illustrated characters, seemingly with water based paint, several other leaves have very faint occasional pencil shading, but generally the condition is extremely good, with solid bright illustrations. The paper wrappers have a chip to the foot of the spine and minor creasing.A rare proof, distributed by the publisher to families with children to test market the book. Possibly only a dozen or so were made up.

In excellent contemporary colour and in Fine condition in the original cloth covers. 160x 74 cms. Detailed plans of London (or indeed anywhere else) are rare in mid Victorian period. This one is at the scale of 5 inches to a mile. Rare, there appear to be no copies of the 1860 in any institutional collection (ESTC)

A biographical work that takes the side of King Louis XVI and denounces the atrocities committed against him during the Revolution

Both joints a little loosened but binding solid and there is no crackjng to cloth covers nor endpaper joints. Scarce this good in the original cloth.Note: initially began as a geological expedition, the book with considerable contribution from Xavier's wife, became a more ethnographic and sociological work on the people and institutions of Southern Russia and the neighbouring regions. Provenance: William F. St. Leger (Kingstown School prize bookplate to the front pastedown).

The First illustrated edition of this scarce work on rolled-sheet lead for roofing and gutters, first published in 1731. Rolled lead had been in use in Britain since 1670 but there was resistance in France from the guild of plumbers. Sainte-Albine defends the advantages of rolled sheet versus cast lead and explains the manufacturing techniques.

Half title, Text leaves Intermittent light to moderate spotting, more so in the preliminaries, and a few others toned, approximately half the plates are toned and a few neatly re-strengthened with tape to gutter, a few are lightly spotted, with a few more spotted to verso only. Bound in later three quarter green morocco, leather rubbed and browned to spine.
