An account of life and politics in Egypt by Edward DeLeon, a Jewish-American diplomat, writer, and journalist who served two terms as Consul-General to Egypt during the pierce administration. Born in Columbia, South Carolina, DeLeon joined the Confederate side during the Civil War, serving as a diplomat in Europe, pleading the confederate case with the governments of England and France. A contemporary advertisement for this book touts DeLeon's "personal knowledge, spiced as it often is with ready anecdote, and setting before us, as it always does, the leading men of modern Egypt with the distinctness of fellow guests at a table-d'hote." Light toning to pages, discoloration and wear to covers, very good overall.

Atlanta, Georgia: Atlanta Woman's Club, 1921. Octavo, white cloth with blue lettering, 253, [48] pp, several pages of illustrations of food. A rare cookbook by the Atlanta Woman's Club, published to raise funds for their new auditorium. The introduction notes that each recipe was vetted by the club's Home Economics director, and adds that "altho this volume specializes in typical Southern recipes, it also contains many choice tid-bits from other sections owing to the cosmopolitan character of the Woman's Club membership.” The book includes chapters on "budgeting your time", "necessary kitchen equipment," and "scientific canning”, “school and business lunches,” sweet potato recipes (an entire chapter’s worth),"thrift" recipes, creole recipes (which were in the family of a Creole club member for generations), and. A collection of stories of plantation life in the old South, written by a Raleigh woman whose family owned eight estates in the area. The author was 65 when she wrote these reminiscenes, not intended for publication, but meant to be passed down to ther grandchildren. The stories include Plantation Life, Going to the Plantation, My Own Early Home, Two Bob Whites, Little Dave, The Hog-Feeder's Day, The Junior Reserve, Mammy, and War Reminiscences. An excellent copy with bit of toning to pages and wear to spine tips. Early 20th century bookplate to front pastedown and 1932 ownership inscription to front endpaper.
