An account of life and politics in Egypt by Edward DeLeon, a Jewish-American diplomat, writer, and journalist who served two terms as Consul-General to Egypt during the pierce administration. Born in Columbia, South Carolina, DeLeon joined the Confederate side during the Civil War, serving as a diplomat in Europe, pleading the confederate case with the governments of England and France. A contemporary advertisement for this book touts DeLeon's "personal knowledge, spiced as it often is with ready anecdote, and setting before us, as it always does, the leading men of modern Egypt with the distinctness of fellow guests at a table-d'hote." Light toning to pages, discoloration and wear to covers, very good overall.
