Description:
AN EXPOSITION OF FREE BEER IN 1887
[BEER EXPOSITION, FRENCH]. Paris: Imprimiere Nationale, July, 1887.
Beer was becoming more popular in France, despite the popularity of wine. Here is a large broadside advertising an exhibition devoted to French beer, and its accoutrements. We have been told this exposition was the first of its kind for French beer, but we have not confirmed that to be the case. Not in the 48-page list by Morna Daniels, Paris National and International Expositions from 1790 to 1900: A Finding List of British Library Holdings, in eBritish Library Journal, 2013. A few minor fold tears, with no loss, otherwise fine. Not in OCLC.

Agrees with Hatton & Cleaver, pp. 227-250, with the following exceptions: In part 4 only two of the four-fold ad sheet "Letts Diary" and the specimen leaves for it are not here; part 7, no slip for "Cheap Edition of the Works of Mr. Charles Dickens," similar to slip in part 6; part 8, no ads for "Gilbert's Dictionary of the English Language," and the same is true for part 10; part 11, no ad-slip for Letts & Son; part 15, ad pages 3-10 not… Read More

Description:
[DICKENS, Charles]. Court of Common Sense. 4to broadside, 10 x 7 1/2", mounted on a sheet from an album. [London:] Tuck & Co. Printers, Little St. Thomas Apostle [1837].
A humorous reference to Sam Weller in Dickens' Pickwick Papers (1837), who mixed up "V" and "W" in his speech. The broadside describes Weller's trial: "Yesterday a gentleman of a silky appearance, and prepossessing manners, was placed at the bar, charged with clipping, cutting, maiming, and otherwise disfiguring the lawful language of His Majesty's subjects, so as to render it quite unintelligible to all plain-spoken Englishmen...The first witness for the prosecution was the letter V; who stated that on several public occasions, but more particularly at Wardmotes and Vestries, the defendant had most shamelessly mangled and ill used him...The only witness for the defendant, was a Mr. Bos [i.e. "Boz," Charles Dickens], who said he had known the defendant some… Read More

First Edition. One of Dumas' most influential plays which explores sexual immorality. It deals with the way prostitution threatened the institution of marriage. "Demi-Monde" was the word invented by Duas to mean the world occupied by pleasure-loving elite men and the women who entertained them and whom they kept. Dumas' third play, and the one which some critics consider the definitive model of the 19th century comedy, and the one which has been esteemed the author's best. "He coined the word to describe the world of les déclassées portrayed in the play...The word was recognized by the Académie français and defined as "la société des femmes de moeurs… Read More
