Single 8-page issue of The Friend, November 1, 1854. Paper includes a list of ships arriving and leaving Honolulu, (erroneously spelled "Hnolulu" on the banner), a Sabbath sermon, Sailing directions for the Harbor of Simoda, correspondence, ads, and even a spot of poetry. Also includes a list of Whalemen's Letters held at the Hawaiian Post Office as of October 10. Page one also includes an interesting note of the completion of a panoramic lithograph of Honolulu by Mr. Emmert. "Only about twenty or thirty sets of the views remain unsold...." Tear on right side extends 1/2 inch into map; archivally repaired. Previous folds. Likely extracted from an atlas or book although no evidence of binding. Apparently has been framed and re-framed with remnants of archival framer's tape on verso. Will ship with current matting. Very Good condition. Uncommon map of Port-Paix on the Northern Coast of Santo Domingo. The French website www.catalogue.bnf.fr credits the map to Jean-Baptiste Bourguignon d'Anville, a French geographer and cartographer. Extracted from an atlas or book with notation on map, "Tom. II.pag.273." On watermarked paper (see photo of map on light table to see watermark).

[Mining] Map of the Principal Quartz and Gravel Mines in Tuolumne County, California--Taken from Government Surveys and Mineral Records Single-sheet measures 36 x 28 inches. Has been lightly folded into quarters. Very clean except for moderate edge wear and light toning. Very Good Condition. Highly detailed map showing mines and ditches along the Tuolumne River in the Sierra Nevada and foothills. The towns shown include Sonora, Jamestown, Chinese Camp, Columbia, Summersville, Cherokee, Big Oak Flat, Confidence, and Groveland. Of note is the pleasing touch of 6 tree vignettes: White Oak, Black Oak, Scrub Pine, Red Pine, Sugar Pine and Fir. Lumber, of course, was critical to most mining operations. Scale is one mile to one inch. Produced as a stand alone map--not for an atlas. Will ship in its lightly folded format, in a box to protect the map.

Classic early 20th century cook book designed for the young bride. recipes in each department and subdivision are in alphabetical order, with each department tabbed for easy finding. Housed in four original file folders. Very Good condition overall; a few small stains, a bit of light edgewear and toning. This is a collection of 118 poems written by Agnes Louise Dean. Dean was born in Minneapolis in 1882. In 1900 she graduated from Minneapolis' Central High School, where she won first prize in the Gale contest for her essay "The Minstrelsy of Nations." She graduated from Smith, and in the 1940s taught English language and literature at Mount Holyoke College. Roughly translated document concerning the approval and storage of holy relics, likely those of St. Alphonsus Maria de Liguori, bishop of Sant'Agata dei Goti, a Roman Catholic diocese in the Province of Benevento, Campania, southern Italy. From what I can discern, this document is a record of the examination of St. Alphonsus Ligouri's relics and their return to proper storage; it is unclear if Archbishop Dechamps examined them himself or if it was merely done by his mandate. This is a clipping of the article about the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln, from the extra night report of the Missouri Democrat, Saturday, April 15, 1865. Secretary of War Edwin M. Stanton wrote the official government dispatch. At the time of this extra night report, President Lincoln was still alive, though he was "in a state of syncope, totally insensible, and breathing slowly; the blood oozed from the wound at the back of his head", and he was "not expected to live through the night." Fine condition. Dated February 6, 1926: "Dear Mr. Ryder: I have been in Florida & just returned. Find your letter of Jan. 18th! here. Am referring it to Mr. Liveright with the suggestion that he send you the book. And I am deeply appreciative of your words to me. Thank you very much. Theodore Dreiser" Theodore Dreiser (1871-1945) was an American journalist and author whose best-known work, "An American Tragedy" was published in 1925 just prior to this letter. "Liveright" is referring to his long-time publisher Horace Liveright of Boni and Liveright. Wish we knew the backstory of the letter from Mr. Ryder to Dreiser.

Lithograph print on matboard; print very lightly toned to edges, could be hidden with frame; no creases or edge wear; very good condition. This print has a Dubuffet autograph to the bottom right corner; however, it appears to be printed, not an actual signature. Jean Dubuffet (1901-1985) was a French painter and sculptor of the School of Paris. He embraced a "low art" aesthetic, favoring authenticity over traditional artistic beauty standards, and is best known for founding the "art brut" or "raw art" movement. Dubuffet characterized art brut as being "created from solitude and from pure and authentic creative impulses... where the worries of competition, acclaim and social promotion do not interfere".

Dustin, Capt. 6th N.H.V.--July 11, 1864 4-page bifolium manuscript letter (7.5 x 9.75 inches) on lined white paper. First leaf lightly toned otherwise clean and legible. Very Good Condition. Very curious Civil War era letter from a recently discharged soldier from the 6th New Hampshire Volunteers to his commanding officer requesting a letter of recommendation. The soldier, Captain Isaiah A. Dustin, enlisted in October 1861 and was discharged for disability on 5/17/1864. The New Hampshire 6th saw much action including the Battle of Camden, 2nd Bull Run, Battle of South Mountain, Antietam, Fredericksburg and much more. According to the Wikipedia page on the 6th, "the regiment lost a total of 418 men during service; 10 officers and 177 enlisted men killed or mortally wounded, 3 officers and 228 enlisted men died of disease."
