Paris: Bachelier, 1839. 1st edition. [Daguerre, Louis-Jacques-Mandé (1787-1851).] Arago, François (1786-1853). Le Daguerréotype. In: Comptes rendus IX (July-Dec. 1839): 250-67. 4to. [4], 903, [1]pp. Paris: Bachelier, 1839. Later wrappers, uncut & unopened. Slight browning & foxing but fine. First Edition of the first official disclosure of the "daguerreotype" photographic process invented in the 1830s by Louis Daguerre (1787-1851), preceding the publication of Daguerre's Historique de description des procédés du daguerreotype et du diorama (1839). The daguerreotype was the first practical and commercially viable photographic process, and the first to be announced publicly. Daguerre, an artist and chemist, had been working for over a decade on methods of fixing images photographically, initially in partnership with Joseph Nicéphore Niépce (1765-1833), whose "heliographic" process, developed in the 1820s, is now recognized as the first successful example of photography. After Niépce's death…

Full morocco, gilt-ruled, in antique style. Marginal repairs to title and one or two other leaves, not affecting text, but very good. Errata corrected in an early hand. Both states are printed from the same setting of type (with these exceptions), and neither is found as a cancel" (Gaskell). London: D. Wilson, 1750. [D'Arthenay, Guillaume Marie.] Fordyce, William (translator and editor). Memoirs concerning Herculaneum, the subterranean city, lately discovered at the foot of Mount Vesuvius . . . 8vo. 4, 68pp. London: Printed for D. Wilson, 1750. 202 x 123 mm. Modern full morocco, gilt-lettered front cover. Minor dampstaining and toning, small spot on title, but very good. First Edition in English of d'Arthenay's Mémoire sur la ville souterraine découverte au pied du Mont Vésuve (1748), and one of the first publications in English on the recently discovered lost city of Herculaneum, the ancient Roman city buried in ash during the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius in 79 A.D. D'Arthenay's pamphlet is one of the early unauthorized memoirs on the official excavation of Herculaneum, which had begun in 1738 under the patronage of King Charles VII of Naples. The Neapolitan government, anxious to prevent theft and to exploit the site's prestige value, severely restricted access to the buried city to…

Description:
1873. Darwin, Charles (1809-82). Origin of certain instincts. In Nature 7 (1873): 417-418. Whole number. [cix] - cxii, 417-436, cxiii - cxvi pp. 269 x 183 mm. Without wrappers. First and last leaves (conjugate) detached, but very good otherwise. First Edition, of one of Darwin's lesser-known discoveries. Darwin was the first to postulate, in this paper, the existence of an inertially-based navigational system in animals; his suggestion was confirmed by studies done in the 20th century. This type of navigational system, now known as path integration, uses input from the vestibular organs and other sensors in the body to enable an animal, such as a migrating bird, to estimate its position with relation to its home. Freeman, The Works of Charles Darwin, 1760. .
