From the preface: "This little book is an outgrowth from the experience of many who wait upon the domestic altars of our city. It gives the results of countless experiments in the direction of prudent wholesome, healthful, enjoyable cooking. Among the numerous and wide-ranging list of dishes are a recipe for "Ochra, Or Gumbo Soup," and several prairie chicken recipes including "To Fry Prairie Chicken" and "Stewed Prairie Chicken"; a brief section at the end "Recipes for the Sick," contains a recipe for Tamarind Syrup. Covers faded and heavily stained, wear to corners, small hole through one leaf, pages lightly toned with occasional spattering/staining, lacking front endpaper.

Handwritten letter, 8.5 x 11", 2pp, by William Evarts, American lawyer and statesman who served as U.S. Secretary of State, U.S. Attorney General and U.S. Senator from New York, written to his friend Edwards Pierrepont, attorney, reformer, jurist, traveler, New York U.S. Attorney, U.S. Attorney General, U.S. Minister to England, and orator. Evarts writes "I wished to learn what your disposition was Windsor-wards as well as to learn how you stand on the political questions of the day...no one return acknowlesdgement is of more interest to me than your's, Lincoln's, Clause's, Morgan's & Seymours." In very good condition, a bit yellowed, with folding creases.
