Top edge grey, other edges uncut with 8 black and white illustrations by the author. There is toning to the spine and a little light marking to the boards. There is a little rubbing and pushing to the spine tips edges and corners with a 0.5 cm hole in the cloth at the foot of the spine. Internally, there are two book plates and a newspaper cutting to the endpapers and some pencil notes including a family tree of some of those mentioned in the book (images available). There is spotting to the endpapers and occasional handling marks and spotting within the text and dust marking to the uncut edges. An unusual E.V.B. work. VG++. 1st Deluxe Edition. 20.5 x 27 cm brown bevelled buckram with gilt stamped titles on orange and cream cartouche and four gilt and white roses in each of the four corners. All edges gilt [iv]57[3]pp with 10 full page chromolithographic illustrations each with a captioned paper guards. There is a some rubbing to the spine tips and corners and edges with minor loss of cloth on the corners and 0.5 cm loss at the head of the spine. There are small cracks on the edges of the spine with minor loss but the notoriously delicate spine is intact and the binding remains firm. Internally clean, without name, inscription or bookplate. There is toning/spotting to the verso of the front free endpaper and facing recto of the frontispiece although the image is not affected and the usual ghosting from the images on the facing captioned guards. VG+/VG+. 1st Edition. 108 x 173 cm paperback in original glassine jacket with gilt stamped titles to the front and spine and decoration to the front and rear. Uncut edges [xiv] 218 [2]pp with 21 black and white illustrations by Boyle. The book is clean and bright with a little rubbing to the bottom corner of the front cover. Internally it is without name inscription or bookplate an only a touch of toning to the uncut edges and a small 3mm ink dot to the top of the recto of the frontispiece. The front free endpaper has been removed at some point. The delicate glassine jacket is remarkably well preserved considering its age. It has a little toning and a hint of wrinkling at the front, with a little rubbing to the corners and spine tips which have minor loss. The loss to the head of the spine extends a little onto the front panel for 1cm. Printed glassine jackets from this period are difficult to find particularly in such lovely condition. All edges red, pale yellow endpapers, [iv]57[3]pp, with 10 full page chromolithographic illustrations each with a captioned paper guards. Light rubbing to the spine tips and corners with a little bruising to the corners of the lower board. There is a gift inscription dated 1883 on the front free endpaper. There is toning to the free endpapers and to the verso of the plate pages and spotting to plates 2, 7 and 10 the last of which has 10 small pinpricks along the fore edge that do not affect the image in any way. All edges gilt, [iv]110[4]pp with 1 tipped in colour illustration, four double page colour silhouette and one single, together with four double page, eight single page and 34 black silhouettes within the text. Signed by Arthur Rackham to the limitation page. In felt lined blue cloth slip case. A near fine signed binding noting just a touch of rubbing to the titles label. Internally signed by Arthur Rackham but without other names, inscriptions or bookplates. Clean of handling marks but with some ghosting from silhouettes onto the facing pages as is usually found with this book.
