Joseph Warren Fabens (1821-1875) was an American businessman, U.S. Consul at Cayenne (& etc.), and author whose several novels were set in central America ("A Story of Life on the Isthmus," "Life in Santo Domingo, By a Settler." etc.). This unusual story takes place in Panama and involves a scheme to bring camels to the western United States. Spine fading, cover wear, occasional foxing, though not heavy. Fragg was the Deputy Keeper of Ethnography at the British Museum. Front cover just a trifle warped; a bit of wear to the lower corner tip, previous owner bookplate on end paper. Franz Farga (1973 - 1950) was born in Bohemia and was a well-known author who settled in Vienna in the 1920's; he devoted most of his life to the study of music theory and history. In this uncommon book he covers the history of the violin and violin makers in the first half of his book, and devotes the last half to the history of prominent violinists. This appears to be the first American edition. Original black cloth publisher's covers with gilt spine lettering. This is a nice clean, tight and unmarked book with no interior or exterior markings (with the exception of a previous owner's name on the front paste down) and no bookplates. This early New Hampshire gazetteer contains town and city names, history, names of first settlers & their hardships, county histories and names, etc. Contains 9 plates & a HAND-COLORED FOLDING MAP which is separated at some folds and torn at bottom through careless refolding. Top of spine pulled with two minor tears. This is a desireable early New Hampshire gazetteer. Original leather covers with original red leather spine label, the joints are tender, scattered light foxing and tanning to text blocks, previous owner name (Smith Swaines) tipped in on a card on front end paper & dated March 4th, 1827, one signature pulled. Philadelphia: John E. Potter. Good+. 1860. Hardcover. Farnham describes his travels and adventures in California in 1840. He left Oregon by sailing ship for California (by way of Hawaii) and his narrative is filled with local color. The book is illustrated with 20 plates and a frontis illustration. This is a later printing of the original 1844 edition which was titled "Travels in the Californias." The book was republished in 1859 with a new title, "The Early Days of California." The author says that this book is a sequel to his previous book, "Travels in the Great Western Prairies" which was published in 1843. The covers are the original publishe's dark green cloth binding; the gilt spine lettering is dull, but still legible. There is foxing to the frontis illustration and its tissue guard, and some light tanning to the title page opposite the tissue guard. A juvenile history of rockets leading up to the Apollo 13 mission; also includes theory, etc. More text than the typical children's book, but still well-illustrated with photos and drawings that are both in color & black & white. There are not internal or external markings, owner names, or bookplates. There is a little sticker residue on front cover & a some light rubbing to the covers in a few places. The book has pictorial covers and is a large format, over size book. The cover title is: The Story of Rockets. This is Volume 3 of the first edition which was issued in 1911 in three volumes by Yale University. This is Volume 3 ONLY of the three volume set. It is bound in the publisher's original brown cloth covers with gilt spine lettering; the top edge is also gilt. The covers are spotted and there is a previous owner's bookplate on the front paste down as well as a previous owner's name in pencil dated 1912 on the front end paper. The covers are spotted, however the contents are clean and the book is tight. The first edition of this work is uncommon. Contains: Appendix A - F, Index of the Clauses of the Constitution, and General Index. This is not the later 1937 revised edition--it is the first 1911 edition. Traverse City: Privately Published. Very Good. 1908. Xerox 3 Hole Punch. This is an unusual item. First published in 1908 in the National Czech publication Amerikan Kalandar, it was translated by Mr. & Mrs. Edward Van Leishout in 1977 and issued in its present form. It is a xerox of the translation contained in a 3 hole report cover. It contains 49 sheets and each is printed on one side. There are reproductions of the author's paintings scattered throughout. This is a very pretty book containing works by three Nobel Prize winners: William Faulkner (A Rose for Emily, and As I Lay Dying), Eugene O'Neill (The Emperor Jones, and Homecoming), and John Steinbeck (In Dubious Battle). It includes the Nobel presentation speech, the authors' acceptance speeches, representation of their works, and biographies of each.
