Boards a little soiled, front board unevenly sunned, a touch of wear to extremities. Numbered in ink to limitation-page. An early production from Bristol bookseller Douglas Cleverdon (1903-1987), reprinting Farquhar’s 1707 comedy with 7 new illustrations by Jean Emile Laboureur (1877-1943), 6 full-page plates and a title-page vignette. This copy is one of the 450 standard issue copies, but from the preferred issue: as the printed publisher’s note following the title-page explains, the odd-numbered copies (for Cleverdon to sell in the UK) were withdrawn and reprinted by Walter Lewis at The University Press, Cambridge after Cleverdon was dissatisfied with the quality of the work by the original printer, the Country Life Press in Garden City, New York. Untrimmed in original brown cloth, spines lettered direct in gilt. Bindings just a touch marked, endpapers toned. Numbered in ink to limitation-pages. 450 copies of this attractive reprint of a Frenchman’s account of his travels through Britain were printed, with this being number 14 of the 50 deluxe examples printed on van Gelder paper, with the plates on Japanese vellum.

Paris: Chez les Freres Estienne, 1768. 2 vols., 12mo, pp. [iv], xlviii, 380, [4]; [iv], 480 + frontispiece, 24 plates and a folding map. Contemporary marbled sheep, spines divided by raised bands, brown morocco labels, other compartments tooled in gilt, edges red, marbled endpapers. A touch of toning to first and last leaves. A little rubbed, joints starting, corners worn. Amorial wax seals of Lindesay family and ownership signatures of P. Lindesay, Musselburgh, to pastedowns, signatures of P. Lindesay also to title-pages beneath earlier struck-through signature, ownership inscriptions of George Paterson dated 1841 to half-titles. A scarce printing of Fénelon’s popular novel, which Worldcat records in just 2 locations, both in Switzerland, in a worn but still attractive contemporary binding. This copy belonged to a P. Lindesay of Musselburgh, most likely Sir Patrick Lindesay (1778-1839), soldier and colonial administrator, the namesake of 2 mountains and one river in Australia.

London: Printed for A. Strahan, 1790. 8vo, pp. [xii], xliii, [i], 272 + 9 folding plates. Contemporary marbled calf, spine divided by gilt rules, red morocco label, edges sprinkled blue. Some light spotting and soiling, fore-edges of several plates more soiled and chipped, one or two small repairs. Binding rather rubbed, extremities a bit worn, joints cracked, front hinge relined. Ownership inscription of Andrew Pollock (1804) to flyleaf, and pencilled inscription of Thomas Bunyan to half-title and title-page. The second posthumous edition (first 1773, reprinted 1778) of this practical guide to mechanical construction of scientific and horological instruments. James Ferguson (1710-1776), Scottish natural philosopher and inventor, published numerous works simplifying complex scientific and engineering concepts, usually paired with accomplished diagrams from his own drawings; they remained in practical use well into the nineteenth century. Glasgow: Printed by and for Chapman and Lang, 1800. 12mo, pp. 30, [ii], 193, [1] + engraved frontispiece portrait and two engraved plates. Contemporary half calf, marbled boards, spine divided by raised bands between blind rules, green morocco label lettered in gilt, other compartments tooled in blind, marbled edges and endpapers. Some foxing, particularly to plates, tear to one leaf with no loss of sense. Binding a little rubbed and marked, rear joint just starting. An early edition of Fergusson’s poems published with David Irving’s (1778-1860) biography of the poet, which had been first published separately the year before. One of the engravings all too clearly captures a verse from ‘A Saturday’s Expedition’, detailing ‘The woeful fate of those whose cruel stars / Have doom’d them subject to the languid powers / Of wat’ry sickness’ - i.e. seasickness. [Edinburgh]: Impentit at Sanctandrois be Robert Lekpreuik, 1830. 8vo, pp. [32]. Untrimmed and stitched as issued without wrappers. Some light soiling and spotting. A facsimile of the very rare 1572 Lekprevick printing of this sermon on tithes, produced from the sole surviving copy (then in the Advocates Library, now the NLS) without any indication of its source but probably a project of John Lee (1779-1859), the academic and polymath who went from lecturing at St Andrews, by way of several positions in the kirk, to becoming Principal of the University of Edinburgh. Lee was a known bibliomaniac and his posthumous contribution to the Ballantyne Club was a volume of reprints of all of Fergusson’s surviving tracts. Beveridge’s bibliography of Dunfermline dates this version to c.1828 while other sources guess at 1830 and 1840, and it is itself scarce, with a handful of copies in COPAC. Beveridge ‘Dunfermline’ p. 140.

Front joint sometime reinforced with paper tape, front joint splitting at half-title. A small, scarce book by jobbing Scottish writer Robert Menzies Fergusson, whose other written output includes a cyclist travelogue through Holland and Belgium, a volume of Ochil fairy tales and a book of poetry. This book seems to have been produced owing to an excess of (ill-)feeling on Fergusson’s part - he views vagrants as ‘regular loafers, lookers for work without the desire to find it, migratory tramps who accost every traveller they meet and glibly tell a made-up story of dire misfortune, with which the prey upon the kindly feelings of the unthinking, who hand them a few coppers in order to get rid of their melancholy pleadings’ (p.12). Light foxing and spotting. Spine rubbed, labels lost, boards a bit scratched. The political theorist and book collector Andrew Fletcher of Saltoun (1653-1716) published numerous pamphlets on political subjects, which are collected here with reproductions of their original title-pages but continuous pagination. ‘Fletcher's reputation as a ‘patriot’... was well established in his own lifetime... An important early step in its consolidation was the collection of his pamphlets in a volume of Political Works, published in 1732 by three London booksellers; who or what prompted them to do so is unknown’ (ODNB). Shrewsbury: Printed by J. Eddowes, 1776. FIRST EDITION, 12mo, pp. viii, 130. Extracted from a volume with portion of leather spine remaining. Half-title discarded. Some minor spotting. The first edition of this scarce tract on the American Revolution by the naturalised clergyman John William Fletcher (d. 1785), born Jean Guillaume de la Flechere in Switzerland before moving to England at the age of 21. A skilled preacher of Methodist tendencies, Fletcher was close with John and Charles Wesley but disappointed them by not seeking to rise beyond the living of Madeley in Shropshire. This did however leave him time to write and he became 'a prolific and meticulously detailed writer'.
