Jenkinson was active in Broken Hill from 1885, according to his advertisement in 'The History of Broken Hill' by Samuel Curtis (1908); Davies and Stanbury (1985) have him there from 1889. Broken Hill Proprietary Company Limited (now BHP Billiton) has gone on to become the largest mining company in the world. CONDITION : A few small marks and light soiling.

1776. Copper-line engraving with gouache. 210mm by 390mm (image) 325mm by 455mm (sheet). Engraving from William Hamilton's 'Campi Phlegraei'. The area around Naples was known locally as the Campi Phlegraei, or 'flaming fields', owing to the frequent and violent eruptions of Mount Vesuvius. From his country house at the foot of the volcano, William Hamilton (1730-1803) was ideally placed to witness and investigate the eruptions of the 1770s. Hamilton wanted to create a definitive guide to the volcano, to be as aesthetically beautiful as it was intellectually stimulating. He employed the Anglo-Neapolitan artist Peter Fabris to create sketches in situ to illustrate the work. These were then reproduced in prints that were hand coloured individually by local artists by the application of gouache. The process was overseen at every stage by Hamilton. The work was published in 1776 as 'Campi Phlegraei: observations on the volcanos of the two Sicilies'.

He settled in London in the 1780s and, since he specialized in aquatint engraving, became responsible for the successful production of many ambitious topographical works. He worked closely with Joseph Farington, who made the drawings for An History of the River Thames by William Combe, published by John Boydell (London, 1794-6).Joseph Farington (1747-1821) was an eighteenth-century English landscape painter and diarist.

A view of St Pauls from the south side of the Thames.Farrell was a Scottish etcher specializing in architectural etchings. He was the Official Artist with the 51st Highlanders 1914-1918. Acid burn from previous mount.

Farrell was a Scottish etcher specializing in architectural etchings. He was the Official Artist with the 51st Highlanders 1914-1918. CONDITION : A couple of tiny marks in the image. Some faint handling creases in outer margins, well away from image area.

He and his wife Giula (1850-1903) came to the Australasia with Giula's aunt Adelaide Ristori in 1875. Between 1884 and 1886 Eduardo co-managed the Sydney Opera House with WJ Wilson. The monogram of HJW in the image suggests that Herbert J Woodhouse (1855-1920) prepared a sketch from the photograph, that was then lithographed.

He was educated at Peterhouse, Cambridge, where he was elected fellow in 1761. He practised medicine in London and was elected a fellow of the Royal Society in 1779. Some light foxing.
