Handsomely bound in contemporary full brown calf; the boards ruled in gilt; the spines with five raised bands, compartments with gilt foliate decoration, contrasting red and blue gilt morocco title and volume labels and additional green gilt morocco ownership label for Louisa Pereira to each volume. Marbled endpapers. Illustrated with a copper-engraved frontispiece to each volume and 14 engraved plates, plans and maps (some folding, 22 illustrations in total). Further subsequent ownership inscription in ink manuscript to the front free endpaper of the first volume ("Henrietta Skene / given to her by her Father / 8 Volumes Complete / November 16 1825"), and with her name in ink to the front endpaper of each volume. Publisher's original maroon cloth over bevelled boards with gilt titles and decoration to the upper board, repeated in blind to the lower board. All edges gilt. 11 unnumbered thick card leaves printed on rectos only, mounted on stubs, comprising a chromolithographic title page, followed by a preface by Rev. Samuel Wilberforce printed in red and black, and 9 chromolithographic leaves in the style of an illuminated manuscript, richly coloured and incorporating gold and silver. One leaf embellished with an original albumen photographic vignette. Expertly re-cased. A very good copy, the binding square and firm with a hint of wear to the spine ends and corners. The contents with a small area of abrasion to the front pastedown and some scattered foxing (heavier to the endpapers) are otherwise in very good order. All edges gilt. Illustrated with an engraved portrait frontispiece of Fenelon and an additional decorative plate depicting urns and foliage. Contemporary bookseller's ticket for Philp & Evans of 29 Clare St., Bristol to the front pastedown. 127pp. A very good copy, the binding square and secure with a little cracking to the front hinge, rubbing to the extremities of the boards and some wear to the leather onlays. Description:
[c.1930].. Colour lithograph reproducing an original painting by Claude Flight. The image measuring 17.8 x 15cm. Signed in ink to the lower right margin and titled in ink to the lower left. Contained within the original glazed wooden frame, with label to the rear: "F. J. Ward / 3 Baker St. / London, W.1. / and at / 48 Gt. Russell St. / W.C.1. / (Helena Johnston)" (21.6 x 18.3cm including frame). There is a touch of fading to the ink signature/title. The lithograph is in very good condition, free from foxing and with the colours remaining bold and bright. The frame is also in very good order with just a few expected minor knocks and marks. An uncommon signed lithograph reproducing a painting of a stylised French rural scene by the artist Claude Flight (1881-1955), best known as a leading pioneer and promoter of linocut printmaking during the inter-war period.

Description:
Potts Point, NSW: Hordern House., 2001. Limited edition, one of 300 copies printed. Thick quarto. Publisher's original light-green cloth with printed paper title label to the upper board and titles blocked in dark green to the spine. Pictorial endpapers. Illustrated with a portrait frontispiece, twenty maps and illustrations, and eight colour plates. A near fine copy, the binding square and firm with a very minor mark to the spine and a couple of faint marks to the top edge of the lower board. The contents remain clean and crisp throughout. The only edition in English of Freycinet's comprehensive examination of early New South Wales, one of the most important historical texts to deal with Australian settlement, and especially with the city of Sydney. The original text appeared as chapters 29 to 40 of the 'Historique' section of Freycinet's 'Voyage autour du Monde' (1824-1844), and is here translated from the French by Thomas Cullity, with an additional introduction and notes.
