Very rare first edition, one of 1000 copies produced. Although Gandhi left South Africa in 1914, he remained very interested and involved in South African racial and social politics. 'It was in South Africa that Gandhiji formulated the concept and practice of satyagraha. It was in South Africa that his attitude to the social problem of India crystallized' (p. v). These writings of Gandhi, sometimes from very hard to trace printed sources, are prefaced by Trevor Huddleston. He writes that the book 'appears at precisely the right moment in the history of the struggle against the institutional racism know as 'apardheid' … Here for the fist time the true significance of Mohandas Gandhi's sojourn in South Africa has been spelt out' (p. iii). First edition published on the occasion of the British Empire Exhibition. A very rare monograph on the most remote inhabited archipelago in the world.

Mexico City, La Enseñanza, 1876. 8vo. 20th-century buckram, printed front wrapper bound in; pp. 130, [4, the first two blank], double page map, 8 chromo-lithographic maps of costumes, four leaves of musical scores, printed on both sides; front wrapper and final leaf of music with flawed corners, map spotted and text evenly a little toned, both as usual; still a good copy; from Dyer Library in Saco, Maine. First edition. The Mexican scientist Antonio Garcia Cubas (1832-1912) sums up the state of affairs in Mexico in the mid-1870s. In the third part on ethnography he focuses on the indigineous population. 'For a better knowledge of the races, their real characteristics, their uses and customs should be studied, as I have mentioned on another occasion, in the depths of the mountainous regions where they still preserve their ancient habits and their dialects with greater purity' (pp. 67-68).

Contemporary diced and ornamented calf, spine with raised bands, lettered and ornamented in gilt, boards with gilt double-fillet and ornamented in blind, turn-ins ornamented in gilt, marbled edges; pp. iv, 181, [3], 32 aquatint plates; hinges weakened, extremities a little worn, occasional foxing to plates, as usual, otherwise very good. This is one of the first and most important suites of views of the Rhine at the onset of romantic Rhine perception. It had appeared first in 1788, and the artist and author, a reverend from Battersea, illustrated the views along his journey back from Switzerland in a rather menacing, dark and gothic manner. Abbey 214 (dated 1791).

Original cloth with illustrated dust-wrappers, not price-clipped; pp. 320; 340; 298, plates after photographs in volume one, and this dust-wrapper designed by Ruari MacLean; wrapper of volume II with small marginal flaw to foot of spine, otherwise a very good set, rarely seen together, even in libraries. First English edition, volume two in second impression. The volumes appeared in parallel with the Collins or Collins and Weidenfeld imprint.

1929. A personal postcard, typed address to recto with the inkstamps of the "Physikalisches Institut Universität Tübingen", Tübingen postal cancel, typed to verso and signed in a clear hand, writing in a clerical hand to the verso, in very good condition. Geiger is known for such technical achievements as the Geiger-Marsden experiment and the Geiger counter. In October, 1929, he accepted a position at the University of Tübingen, both as professor of physics and director of the physics research institute. While there, he considerably improved the counter that bears his name, developments that were to lead to the discovery of cosmic-ray showers. This postcard, sent by Geiger from Tübingen to the business firm K. Selmayr, orders "eine Grundserie von Kristall-Gitter-Modellen mit 30 mm Kugeln" (a basic series of crystal-lattice models with 30mm spheres").

'The Hellenistic fortress of Ikaros faces the Arabian Gulf, standing on the south beach of Faïlaka Island (Kuwait). It was built by Antiochos the First at the beginning of the 3rd century BC. The fortress has known several occupation periods, the most important for 150 years in Hellenistic times. Special care was devoted to the fortifications, with many reinforcements, additions and extension. The work of the new French-Kuwaiti expedition (French Institute for the Near East – Department of Antiquities and Museums of Kuwait) is concentrated first on study of the fortifications, in order to understand the chronology of the fortress. Next, this work is linked with the study of the internal circulation, to understand if both are interrelated. Very rare second and enlarged edition of a top-secret military publication, with the improved map. This book reports on the ups and downs of the Saudi dynasty based in Najd, the expansion and vaining of power during the 19th century, the first appearance of the Ottomans in 1818, who were driven from the country in 1831. The book seems to have been useful, as it was reprinted as late as 1981 in a very limited edition as well and is available as a print-on-demand publication. Not in COPAC.

1621. Padua: Martini Stampator Camerale/ Guasparri Crivellari. 1621/1623. Small oblong quarto. Twentieth century wood-patterned boards; pp. 18, 28 plates illustrating methods of carving meat with manuscript additions, missing folding plate of carving utensils; pp. 47, missing all 3 plates; very good. First editions. Significant because it contains the first printings of two parts of what became Giegher's Tre Trattati (1629). The third part, on napkin folding, was never printed individually. Il Trinciato deals with the art of carving meat, while Lo Scalco (The Steward) concerns service; the three parts together became one of the most important guides to the serving of meals in the best houses, and the carving illustrations are both fascinating and appealing. Mattia Giegher (c.1589 - c. 1639, born Matthias Jager in Moosburg, Bavaria) moved to Italy in around 1616 and was so famed for his mastery of the arts of hospitality that he lectured on the subject at the University of Padua. First and only edition. Thompson gave this lecture concerning Gilbert, the 'father' of modern magnetism, at the 23rd March 1903 meeting of the Royal Geographical Society which was on the occasion of the tercentenary of Elizabeth I's death.

Recently rebound in quarter red morocco, black gilt morocco lettering piece to spine, marbled boards; pp. 174 - 298, frontispiece, 15 plates (many folding), numerous text illustrations; very good indeed. First edition. Memoirs of the Carnegie Museum, Vol XI, No. 4. Gilmore's is an important study of the skeleton of the Apatosaurus, an enormous herbivorous dinosaur of the Diplodocid family whose fossil remains have been found in the western United States. It lived in the late Jurassic period and reached lengths of up to 75 feet. The particular specimen under discussion here is an unusually perfect skeleton that is still on show in the Carnegie Museum; it was excavated in 1909-10 and named Apatosaurus Louisae in honour of the wife of Andrew Carnegie.
