Manuscript Stampless Letter From C. Green of Salisbury, New Hampshire to Josiah Green, Charlestown, Massachusetts July, 1843. 4-page manuscript letter folded into stampless envelope. Legible and clean script. Small amount of separation at folds. Envelope has manuscript cancellation for Salisbury, New Hampshire plus .10 cent mailing rate. Very good Condition. Informative and chatty letter from Clarissa Green to her husband Josiah. Second part of letter to "Friend William". The Green family of Salisbury New Hampshire is well documented although we're curious as to why Josiah is residing in Charlestown, Massachusetts, away from his wife in Salisbury. Nonetheless, Josiah worked as a carpenter and clock repairer and was active in the local Baptist Church. Interestingly, a good portion of the letter talks about the organization of the "Christian Church" in Salisbury. "The Christian chh. was organized here without ceremony last Saturday week, with 8 newly baptized members to start with, & then voted in… Read More

Very good/None. Romer Zane Grey 5-Year Diary. Black pebbled leather flexi-boards with gilt title on front. All edges gilt. Wear to edges with mild soiling. Interior relatively clean. With a dozen laid in news clippings, typed notes and telegram. Very Good Condition. Inconsistently used with long gaps without entries. Romer Grey (1909-1976) was the eldest son of the novelist Zane Grey and followed in his father's career as a writer, but never gained success as such, likely finding it difficult to work in Zane Grey's shadow. Romer worked briefly as a contract writer for Paramount Pictures and toiled as a producer in charge of making movies based on his father's novels. In 1955, Romer, along with his brother Loren, formed Zane Grey Productions, Inc. to produce television shows based on his… Read More

Blue wrapper at back; apparently missing from front. Pages toned with mild edge wear. Corrections in purple pen. Very Good Condition. Typed carbon manuscript with annotations in purple pen-- a favorite ink color of Zane Grey. Blue Feather was published in 1961 as "Blue Feather and Other Stories." From a Bonhams and Butterfield description of the typed manuscript of Blue Feather--"Taking a cue from Romeo and Juliet, Grey here narrates the tale of a fierce tribal battle complicated by a love affair between a warrior on one side and the daughter of the chief on the other. Unlike Shakespeare, however, Grey avoids the truly tragic ending for Blue Feather and Nashta, going instead for something a little more lurid: as both Blue Feather and Nashta wait to be sacrificed, his father orders: "'Strip the maiden!' he commanded. [Zane Grey] Typed Manuscript of The Great Slave by Zane Grey, Lackawaxen, Pennsylvania, N.D., circa 1922, 8.5 x 11 inches, 22 pp. 22 lightly toned pages held together with metal clip; front page embossed with Zane Grey's name in top right corner; edges slightly worn, a few small spots to front; overall very good condition. Zane Grey (1872-1939) was an American author of Western novels and short stories, best known for his book Riders of the Purple Sage. This unique typed manuscript appears to be a copy of the original, as there are no indents on the versos; however, it has been copyedited by hand in pencil and ink throughout. This short story, The Great Slave, was published in Grey's 1923 book "Tappan's Burro and Other Stories". The main character is a Crow youth named Siena, who was prophesied to save his starving people. In the story, he and his people are captured and enslaved by their enemies, the Cree; but eventually Siena, using his wits and… Read More

1878. Sixth Plate Frank Grouard Tintype Photograph 2 3/8 x 3 1/2 inches. Tintype has clipped corners as typical. No bends but has light scratches to surface with some loss of emulsion along edges. No markings on verso. Image is slightly underexposed. Good detail especially under a loupe. Rare and perhaps lone surviving 6th plate studio tintype image of Sioux captive and Army scout Frank Grouard (1850-1905). Few Indian Wars personalities led the life Frank Grouard did. Born into a Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saint missionary family in the Tuamotu Archipelago in 1850, Grouard's father was of European descent, his mother Polynesian. His mother returned to the South Pacific in 1853 with his two brothers and Frank was adopted 2 years later by the Pratt family of Beaver, Utah. He left home at the age of 15, heading north to Montana where he became an express rider and stage driver. As legend has it, in 1869 Grouard was robbed on his mail route in rural Montana leaving him without his horse. He… Read More
