The letter includes the original green ten-cent entire (U7?) envelope with a black circular date stamp of "Steilacoom City, W. T. April 28, ".The address "Mr. D. D. Gardiner/Angelica, Allegany County, N. Y. " is written on the front side and "Washington Territory " on the reverse. Original fold marks, otherwise in very good condition.An historically important letter written by Gardner from Hawalbagh during the ratification period of the Treaty of Segauli. The letter starts with information about Nepali troop strength in Kumaon which "does not appear to be above four or five hundred men at present " Other Nepalese troops "are said to have gone to the East towards Nepal. " Generally of the Nepalese troops "there does not seem to be any of that bustle among them that one would expect on the eve of an invasion notwithstanding the warlike preparations on our side - it certainly has not the appearance of war on the part of the Gurkhas. Fold marks, small damp stain in the upper right corner, but otherwise a very good letter, written in a legible hand.Historically interesting letter about early mining operations in Juneau (inc. 1900), Alaska. The author, one “T. H. George,” writes to his friend “Easton,” who apparently held a position on the U.S. Board of Honorable Commissioners. In the letter, George reports on the unusually mild winter conditions and the early revival of mining activities. He then talks about “Hayward & Lane” (aka Juneau Mining Co.), one of the first and biggest mining operators in southeast Alaska, detailing their plans to construct a thirty-stamp mill west of Juneau.
