Though known especially for her partnership with Carver and her stewardship of his legacy, Gallagher is an important Northwest poet and the winner of a Guggenheim and NEA Award among others. A near fine copy with light bumping to upper corners; in a near fine jacket with that same bumping and some light creasing to top of spine .

Richard Cortez Day was a professor of English and creative writing at Humboldt State University in Northern California and was Raymond Carver's mentor there, thus the connection. Jean Craighead George, May 7, 1983." Laid in is a Ex Libris bookplate from Livingston that was once affixed to front pastedown.  Jean Craighead George was a prolific children's book author, most of her book's about animal life. She's best known for the Newberry Medal-winning Julie of the Wolves and for the classic My Side of the Mountain about a boy who ditches NYC for the Catskills wilderness. Her influence on the America's youth appreciation of the natural world was and is substantial. Additionally Dillard has written the names of about a dozen well-known poets not included in the collection, including Anne Sexton, "John Ashberry" [sic], Adrienne Rich, etc., in blue ink at the top of the acknowledgements page near the front of the book. Some of her favorites, maybe, or poets she feels were unjustly omitted? The premise of this book is that 100 poets chose a favorite poem from their own work--a neat idea for an anthology. Dillard is not among the contributors. She was instrumental in the creation of a certificate program of study in Natural History Field Studies at the Audubon Naturalist Society in Chevy Chase. She taught Biology, Ecology, Zoology, and Animal Behavior to undergrad and graduate students." Laid in is a promo sheet from the press. Association copy: Kenneth Rexroth's own copy, inscribed to him and his wife by the author on the half-title page: "For Kenneth + Carol, from Morgan + Ada, Nature through you to us + back again, Santa Barbara, February 1973." Although a major champion of the Beats in San Francisco, Rexroth grew disenchanted with the scene and moved to Santa Barbara in 1968 where, a few years later, he married his longtime assistant, Carol Tinker. Scattered through the books early pages are pencil annotations, strikethroughs, and additions correcting the facts (e.g. "No!"). A neat book. Foxing to upper face of the text block, otherwise near fine in a very good dust jacket with some light foxing/blotching and wear to upper spine and corner. Gilberts's inscription on the title page reads: "To Allen and Susanna--All the best, and thanks for coming to see me read! Elizabeth Gilbert, Oxford, 2002." Conway has traced his hand on the front free end paper and drawn a heart in the middle (on the palm, as it were) with an "E" at its center, presumable for Eustace (but resonantly also standing for Elizabeth). Uncommon to have both signature. A book that did very well in its own right on the way to Eat, Pray, Love, a book about the mythos of the frontier man in the vein of Krakauer's Into the Wild. For its flavor, the finish: "above the trees, the city rose in a kind of splendor / as all that is wild comes to the surface." Also signed in full above her printed name on the title page. Clemente was a professor at SUNY and his papers are held at Rochester University. A very good copy with a mildly slant spine and a remainder mark to bottom text block face.
