The author is "a retired mechanical engineering professor at Michigan Technological University... spent over twenty years researching the infamous wreck of the S S Edmund Fitgerald." His text is complemented by many interesting diagrams and illustrations supporting his theory that the ship hit the Superior Shoal in the eastern end of Lake Superior during the storm and immediately broke apart and sank. This biography of Admiral Geroge Dewey was issued shortly after his success at the Battle of Manila Bay during the Spanish-American War. The text is accompanied by a number of illustrations and photos and one map of Manila Bay. The binding of this book is the original brown decorated covers featuring Admiral Dewey in a white uniform within a red shield and with gilt spine and cover lettering (the gilt letteing is somewhat dull). There is some wear and dulling to the covers, but the binding is intact and tight. This book grew out of an exhibition at the local historical museum and is based on vintage photos in their collection. "Countless hours were spent" researching the photos for this book, and the narrative and captions document the city's growth. Located on Thunder Bay on Lake Huron, the city was first surveyed in 1839 and became a lumbering center in its early years. The first photos date to the 1860's.
