New York: Harper & Brothers, Publishers, 1876 Soft cover in printed tan wrapper, 134 pp. plus publisher's adverts. This is the complete novel. "No. 430 (of 460 selections listed) in the publisher's popular series, the " Library of Select Novels," which was available by post. Owner's signature stamp appears on the wraps. First published in 1875, this was the most popular work of the author, remaining in publication until 1914. Mary Cecil Hay (1839-1886) was a prolific British writer, often working under a male pseudonym. This story of the supposed murder of a wealthy aging uncle by his nephew was "ripped from the headlines," based partly on the story of the murder of William Maxwell, 5th Earl of Nithsdale in 1716, who like the nephew in Hay's story, escaped from execution dressed as a woman. Condition: Very Good. Some loss to head and tale of spine and light creasing. One staple has come through the back of wrap. A couple of small closed tears to front and rear of wrap.
