Description:
London: Chapman & Hall Ltd, 1915. FIRST EDITION, publisher’s presentation copy, 8vo, pp. 84. Original black cloth, front board bordered by double white rules and lettered direct in white. Some spotting and marking, mainly to half-title and flyleaves. Binding rubbed and soiled, front board slightly bowed and cloth a little rippled from damp, white decoration rubbed away in places, evidence of recolouring it to head of spine. Ownership inscription dated May 1916 of ‘H. Henderson “Bard o’Reay” and “the poet of the north”’, ‘presentation copy’ embossment to title-page. An unpleasant copy, but the scarce first edition of Radclyffe Hall’s (1880-1943) sixth book of poetry. This copy belonged to Scottish poet Henry Morrison Henderson (1873-1957) and may have been presented to him by the publisher. While WorldCat cites many copies in North America, there are fewer than a dozen in the UK, and… Read More

London: Published by R. Cocks and Co., 1835. FIRST EDITION, 12mo, pp. viii, 64, 40, 6 [ads]. Original patterned brown cloth, printed paper label to front board, edges sprinkled red. Some scattered toning. Boards stained, worn to extremities, particularly foot of spine, stitching strained in places, label soiled. Contemporary ownership inscription of E. Stich and pencil inscription dated 6-1-83 to pastedown, modern bookplate to flyleaf. Not a lovely copy, but the first edition in its original binding of this primer for composers, that was revised and expanded several times throughout the nineteenth century, reaching a 17th printing and third edition by 1842. Library Hub records 4 copies of this first, with some of them having a larger catalogue of ads to the rear, although this example is complete as issued.

Description:
Edinburgh: William and Robert Chambers, 1836. 8vo, pp. vii, [i], 72 + frontispiece and 4 plates, all with onlaid coloured triangles. Original green textured cloth, printed paper label to front board. Some of the coloured triangles partly oxidised. Cloth somewhat faded and rubbed, label marked. Gift inscription to flyleaf: ‘Alexander Lauder from Mr Patrik, Dec. 1927’. The chief work of David Ramsay Hay (1798-1866), whose artistic leanings were turned towards house-painting by the advice of Sir Walter Scott, for whom he did much work at Abbotsford. He developed his own unique theory of colour harmony, outlined in this work with demonstrations and arguments from (pseudo-)science, and it proved popular and influential: the first edition of 1818 was followed by five more, each expanded and edited.

London: John W. Parker and Son, 1845. 12mo, pp. vii, [i], 288, 4 (ads). Original brown textured cloth, spine lettered in gilt, boards blocked in blind. A little light dustiness in places. Spine ends a touch worn, gutter cracking in a few places but all gatherings firmly held. True to his name, Sir Arthur Helps (1813-1875), later clerk of the Privy Council, took up social issues in the 1840s and 1850s, with among his efforts this ‘paternalist essay on the relations between master and man’, first published 1844. Description:
Paris: Chez Durand... et se vend A Francfort, Chez Jean George Eslinger, 1768. 3 vols, 8vo, pp. 381, [1]; 340; 252, [28]. Contemporary tree calf, spines divided by gilt rules, red and green morocco labels to spines. Poor-quality paper a little toned and spotted. Rubbed, a few small stains, spine heads slightly chipped. Armorial bookplates of Edward, Earl of Powis to front pastedowns, old stickers to head of spines numbered in ink. An early reprint of this scandalous enlightenment philosophy text, first published in 1758. De L’Esprit was condemned by the church, denounced as heretical and publicly burned in Paris for its atheism, as Helvetius argues that concepts of good and evil are taught rather than innate. The resulting furore ensured its success and it was translated into English the following year, where it later proved influential on the work of John Stuart Mill. This edition (possibly with a false Paris imprint?) is scarce outside of Germany, with single copies in France and Belgium… Read More

London: Printed for H. Twyford, T. Dring, J. Place, W. Palmer, 1661. FIRST EDITION, folio, pp. [xvi], 168, [2], 84, [2], 85-196. A few pages misnumbered. Contemporary sheep, boards bordered with triple blind rules, spine divided by raised bands and tooled in gilt. Paper a little toned, contents leafed creased and rubbed to edges. Worn and rather marked with some small losses to spine ends, hinges split but joints holding, pastedowns lifted, flyleaves torn away, label lost. Double-sided contents leaf in contemporary hand tipped in to pastedown, a few page numbers corrected in ink. The first edition of a popular 17th-century history of the Reformation, which was reprinted twice in the following decades. An early owner has provided a lengthy and detailed contents list in a small but legible hand to a tipped-in leaf, something that the publishers also felt a need for as the 1670 second edition contains a printed and even more extensive table of contents to the rear.
