By age 20, he was working as a cowboy and served with the local militia in the many fights against Comanche raiders. In 1857, he joined the Texas Rangers, where he continued to fight in the Indian Wars and served as an Indian scout. Later, when the Civil War began, he served as a scout again.

Generally in very good or better condition, with some pieces chipped and worn, some edge wear and light dust soiling. This is a fantastic collection of musical and theater ephemera from the 1930s and 1940s, mostly pertaining to actors Averell Harris (1881-1966) and his brother Mitchell Harris (1882-1948), as well as stage director Edward Elsner. Averell and Mitchell Harris were the sons of William Harris, a well-known Shakespearean actor and manager. Averell made his stage debut as a child in his father's company and was active on Broadway from 1902-1945. He had parts in "The Deacon" (1925), "Four Walls" (1927), "Night Hostess" (1928), "The Tyrant" (1930) and "Errant Lady" (1934), among other roles. Personal Stationery and Related Materials A collection of printed stationery, envelopes, letterhead, calling cards and mailing labels, all unused, along with Isabel Haynes' funeral program from 1993. The stationery and cards are printed with Haynes' private residential address in Bozeman. Nearly all are in fine condition: One card has a dog-eared corner. 70 total pieces, 14 unique designs. Isabel Haynes took a summer job in Yellowstone in 1922 at the age of 23, and essentially never left. She managed the Roosevelt Lodge for three years, married Jack Ellis Haynes in 1930, and became an integral part of the Haynes family operations. She survived Jack by three decades, donating a large portion of the family archives to the Montana State University. The materials in this lot were sold as part of an estate auction after her death in 1993.

[Large Format 36 x 24-inch Hand Colored Silver Print], "Haynes, St. Paul" copyright bottom right corner plus verso states "13040-Old Faithful Geyser, 150 Ft. Copyright Haynes, St. Paul." Colors are bright, minor wear to edges, 1/2-inch tear lower left corner, 5-inch tear near bottom right; both tears repaired with archival tape on verso. Some glue residues on verso and pinholes at corner. Would frame beautifully. Stunning Haynes large format hand colored image of Old Faithful likely late 19th or early 20th century. Haynes worked for the Northern Pacific Railroad for which he produced hundreds of promotional views and developed "one of the finest inventories of the Dakota country" (Mautz, p. 347). In 1882 Haynes set up a studio in Fargo, Dakota Territory and traveled to Yellowstone to help publicize the Northern Pacific Railroad.
