"Born in 1948 in Nakijin Village, Okinawa, [Henshiki's] encounter with photography began when he entered Okinawa Technical High School. Later, he enrolled in the Department of Engineering at Tokyo Photography University (now Tokyo Polytechnic University). Due to campus conflicts, he couldn't learn photographic techniques and transferred to Tokyo Sogo Photography School. During the closure of the school, he started photographing the islands of Okinawa. In 1985, he co-founded the photography journal "Bifu" with Tatsuhiko Kano and Mao Ishikawa. "After Man and Woman, it was but a small step to Embrace. Actually, Hosoe started photographing for Embrace immediately after completing Man and Woman. Embrace wasn't published, however until 10 years later, in 1971 … According to Hosoe, 'Around the time I started photographing Embrace, Bill Brandt's Perspective of Nude exhibition was imported.
