Original green, red, brown, and blue cloth, spine and front board lettered in gilt. Some foxing. Binding a little rubbed and dustsoiled. The second edition (first 1934) of British poet Edward James’s (1907-1984) start to an ultimately unfinished epic poem.

Edinburgh: Reprinted by A. Neill & Co., 1801. 8vo, pp. 17, [1]. Disbound. A touch of spotting. A translation into Latin by clergyman, historian and correspondent of Robert Burns John Skinner (1721-1807) of a Scots poem long-if-fancifully attributed to King James I. Also issued as part of a collection of macaronic poetry and translations.

London: Faber and Faber, 1980. FIRST EDITION, 8vo, pp. 276. Original red boards, spine lettered in gilt, colour-printed dustjacket. Just a touch of sunning to spine panel, else fine. Printed price to dustjacket flap struck through in pen. A sharp copy of James’ non-series psychological crime thriller. The spine of this copy is much less sunned than is normally found.

London: J. Cross, 1838. FIRST EDITION, 8vo, pp. vi, [ii], 207, [7], 211-295, [5, ads] + folding frontispiece map and 1 single-page map. Original green textured cloth, front board lettered in gilt. Toned and soiled, a few edge-tears to early leaves and frontispiece. Binding somewhat shaken, cloth rubbed and soiled, front joint worn in places. Ownership inscriptions to flyleaf, including ‘Donald M Lachlan’ and ‘Elswith Hall’. Not a beautiful copy, but a scarce work. The text includes an unpaginated ‘Postscript’ after p.207 which describes Edward John Eyre’s overland expedition to Adelaide, including the naming of Lake Hindmarsh, and the ‘gardening calendar’ is probably the first printed gardening guide for South Australia. London: Printed for G. and W.B. Whittaker, 1824. 12mo, pp. [iii]-xx, 358, [2]. Half-title discarded. Contemporary black moire cloth, spine lettered direct in gilt, edges sprinkled red. Binding a little marked, spine lightly sunned. Ownership inscription of John Campbell to title-page, dated 1831, that of Alexander Kerr, The Milton, Aberfoyle to flyleaf, armorial bookplate of Colin Campbell to pastedown, a few marginal ink annotations in an early hand. The second, revised edition of a work first published in 1819 by Alexander Jamieson (1782-1850), Scottish schoolmaster and textbook author. Jamieson’s works particularly took off in the American market, with this book receiving several American reprints throughout the nineteenth century.

Stratford-upon-Avon: The Celandine Press, 1980. NO. 130 OF 150 COPIES SIGNED BY THE AUTHOR AND THE ILLUSTRATOR, 8vo, pp. [22] + 5 tipped-in plates. Original quarter green cloth, orange marbled boards, printed paper label to spine. Spine label just a touch lifted at corners. Signed by Elizabeth Jennings and Anthony Rossiter to limitation-page, pencil ownership inscription to flyleaf dated January 1981.

Boards rubbed and marked, rebacked with buff paper, spines lettered in black, hinges relined and front flyleaves renewed. Bookseller's label of William Whyte, Edinburgh, to vol. 1, a few pencil notes to rear endpapers. A rare and perhaps pirated printing of the essays mostly by Johnson, initially published between 1758 and 1760. The 'additional essays' (three in number, two of them on epitaphs) go back as far as the 1767 third edition. ESTC locates just two copies with this anonymous imprint, in Aberdeen and Cornell. Modern quarter green calf, blue marbled boards, spine divided by raised bands, 2nd compartment lettered direct in gilt. Somewhat toned, frontispiece heavily so, lightly soiled, corners creased. One of numerous printings of a pocket or 'miniature' dictionary claiming descent from Johnson's magisterial work - though likely without any connection beyond his name and the visage on the frontispiece.

Rather rubbed, extremities a touch worn, joints cracked but cords holding. Early ownership inscription of John Jones of Trinity College, Oxford to flyleaf. Todd’s ‘B’ issue - technically really a second edition, as the text was significantly reset between the two printings - of Johnson’s famous early Scottish travel narrative, post-dating but far more influential than Pennant’s Tour in Scotland in 1769. With ‘A Note on the Facsimiles’ loosely inserted. As new. A special production to commemorate 350 years since the founding of Pembroke College, Oxford. The original manuscripts of Johnson’s ‘Prayers and Meditations’ had been given to the Rev. George Strahan, son of Johnson’s main publisher, shortly before the author’s death; the resulting edition of 1785 was significantly edited, but the manuscripts passed to Strahan’s daughter and were given by her to Pembroke in the 1820s, enabling this fully faithful and unexpurgated reproduction at last some 150 years later.

The pagination gap in the first volume is unmentioned by ESTC but is shared by other copies consulted. ESTC N6894.
