Joints of early reback cracked, but boards soundly attached. Early annotations on the endpapers and blank verso of the frontis., with some show through to the frontis. Otherwise clean and tight. A very good copy. There was a London printing (also in latin) in the same year and a number of later reprints in London and in Europe.

Nineteenth century black goatskin, rubbed but sound. Marbled boards and endpapers. The spine lettered direct between raised bands. Neat and unobtrusive blindstamps and library accession number. Internally crisp and tight, a very good copy.

The Garland series were produced in very limited numbers, around 40 copies each.

The front board has a dig into the leather towards the bottom corner and it has a contemporary Eton leaving inscription on the front endpaper.

First published in 1758, the topic was of considerable interest throughout the maritime wars of the second half of the eighteenth century, resulting in a number of reprints in smaller formats. London: Henry G. Bohn,, 1860.. 1860 xii, 564 p. Frontis.and five plates. Contemporary calf prize binding from Glenalmond College. The boards bordered with a two line roll, with the school seal blocked in gilt on the front board. The spine is fully gilt between the raised bands. Minor rubs to the edges and corners and some scuff marks on the rear board. A handsome copy. Glenalmond was founded by the friends Wm. E. Gladstone and John Hope Scott in 1847. Scott was also a close friend of both Newman and Pusey. The prize label is dated 1859 and the award is to Henry William Primrose who became a senior civil servant, serving for a time as Gladstone's private secretary.

A small blank corner torn from the foot of the frontispiece, not affecting the image. This play was popular from the time of its first performance in 1686. The plot is based on the story of Mopsa, taken from Sidney's Arcadia. It is Jevon's only play, possibly written with the assistance of his brother in law Thomas Shadwell. Jevon acted mostly comedy parts on the London stage from 1673 to 1688. PBFA 8/20
