Uncommon signed, and only published as a paperback original with French flaps. This book won the John Burroughs Medal for natural history writing in 2014. A fine copy, no flaws.

One of 300 copies printed on handmade uncut paper. The first appearance of all but two of these poems. The book has the tipped-in, unobtrusive bookplate of collector Irving W. Robbins, Jr., honorary curator of rare books at Stanford University. And it has more: Not only is this copy signed by Robert and Edwin Grabhorn on the first blank, it is also handsomely inscribed by Robinson Jeffers after his foreword: "For Frank Shuabacher, Jr., Sincerely Robinson Jeffers, Tor House, Carmel, September 26, 1940." Leigh Wiener, a notable Hollywood and celebrity photographer then at the beginning of his career, knocked on Jeffers door one day and, three days later, came away with 300 remarkable photos, more portraits than he would do of any other subject. For more, see "'A Revelation': Leigh Wiener's Portraits of Robinson Jeffers" published in California History in January 2010. This portrait depicts Jeffers inside the three-story Hawk Tower, which he built in honor of his wife Una from beach stones he wheelbarrowed up from the shore. Inscribed eight years before the poet's death. The image is approx. 5 x 6.5", the narrow black wood frame is approx. 9.5 x 12.5". The photograph, not examined outside of frame, appears near fine because of one semi-circular impression on it about an inch wide, hardly noticeable unless you're scrutinizing it for imperfections. The image is approx. 6 x 8", the narrow black wood frame is approx. 14.25 x 12.25". The print is near fine with slight bumping/creasing to corners. The frame is very near fine with a few scratches, no distraction. The matte is fine, though the cut is fading a bit, suggesting it is non-archival and could be replaced for best presentation. Also affixed to that page is a "Welcome to the LBJ Ranch" name tag sticker of Scott Bermer, a cameraman for NBC, who presumably obtained the signature on this visit. In five essays by five different writers, this volume describes the four counties in which LBJ grew up and retired to, the country which instilled his love of landscape and influenced his conservationist tendencies. Lady Bird Johnson was also an important influence in that regard and a great supporter of environmental causes. Walter Taylor Bruce, Jr., was a National Park Service historian who served as the superintendent (director) at a number of NPS sites, most significantly, in terms of this book, at the Lyndon B. Johnson National Historic Site near Austin, Texas, where he was the inaugural superintendent from 1970-1972. No doubt the Johnsons and the Bruces got to know each other for that reason. Uncommon signed.  As the subtitle suggests, it explores the history of the Gaia idea--that the Earth is a living, self-regulating organism--put forth by James Lovelock and Lynn Margulis (the book is dedicated to them and "to everyone who gives them a good argument"). As Publishers Weekly reports, in the book "the twists and turns of Gaian politics are deftly unraveled" and it "explores how the Gaian outlook has influenced feminism, goddess art, neopaganism, and Green Party ecopolitics." Joseph is a science journalist who has written for many national magazines. A very good or better book with light edge wear to boards (one bump to top board) and some sporadic dogeared pages; the binding crackles a little as the cover opens. Notable also because it has Junger's authentic early full signature, before it became a perfunctory bestseller Sharpie squiggle. Hard to find. These were the early days of the Perfect Storm, pre-movie. The inscription reads: "To Mark, Best, Sebastian Junger.
