Description:
Berlin: Oriental Translation Fund, 1838. First edition thus. Edited and translated by Adolph Fredericus Stenzler. Quato. iv, 139, [1] pp. Text in Sanskrit and Latin throughout. Publisher's [?] sand-grain green cloth with printed paper spine label, yellow endpapers. Label with tiny chips and some abrasion to the upper front board but a clean and tight copy. "Kumarasambhava is a legendary Sanskrit poem written by Mahakavi Kalidasa. It is one of the most foremost and substantial examples of `Kavya` poetry. Kumarasambhava literally stands for “Birth of the War-god”, i.e. Kartikeya, Shiva`s first son. Kumarasambhava essentially talks about the courtship of Lord Shiva and Parvati. The bulk of chapters have enormous details about the love and romance between Shiva and Parvati. It is stated that a powerful demon named Tarakasura was blessed with the boon that only the child of Lord Shiva could vanquish him and no other. Likewise, Shiva had cut short the desire for love through passionate meditation.… Read More

Benares/London: Theosophical Publishing Society, 1909. First edition. Octavo. xv, [1], 719, [1]. Complete with the 2 fold-outs at the rear (a route map and a photographic illustration of Mt. Gaurishankar) and all plates. Publisher's beveled orange cloth with gilt spine and cover lettering, t.e.g. Bookplate of a Berkeley professor on the front pastedown. An excellent copy, almost flawless. Ekai Kawaguchi (1866 –1945) was a Japanese Buddhist monk who was famed for his four journeys to Nepal (in 1899, 1903, 1905 and 1913) and two to Tibet (July 4, 1900–June 15, 1902, 1913–1915). He was the first recorded Japanese citizen to travel to either country. He left Japan for India in June, 1897, without a guide or map, simply buying his way onto a cargo boat. He had a smattering of English but did not know a word of Hindi or Tibetan. Also, he had no money since he had refused the donations of his friends. Crossing over the Himalayas on an unpatrolled dirt road with an untrustworthy guide, Kawaguchi soon… Read More

Caldwell: Caxton Printers, 1935. First edition. Inscribed by the author. Octavo. Frontispiece portrait, 218 pp. Publisher's red cloth in pictorial dust jacket with only some very minor edge shipping. A very good copy in a very good jacket. Chief Washakie (c. 1798/1810 – February 20, 1900) was a renowned warrior first mentioned in 1840 in the written record of the American fur trapper, Osborne Russell. In 1851, at the urging of trapper Jim Bridger, Washakie led a band of Shoshones to the council meetings of the Treaty of Fort Laramie (1851). Essentially from that time until his death, he was considered the head of the Eastern Shoshones by the representatives of the United States government. This book is a kind of poetic paean to him. The inscription reads; Wishing Dr. Nolie Mumey a joyous Christmas (1937) and glorious New Year. Dr. Keith is an Elder in out church in Caspar. Since you love the history of the early West we thought you would enjoy this book. We secured Dr. Keith's autograph in it for… Read More

His study of the paper’s famed Walt Whitman appeared in the Atlantic Monthly in 1903. Skinner published collections of myths, legends and folklore found inside the United States and across the world. Skinner hoped that America’s progress would transform the nation’s few legends into few but great ones – “as time goes on the figures seen against the morning twilight of our history will rise to more commanding stature.” He hoped to combine folklore conventions with New England transcendentalism to keep… Read More

Very mild edge wear to jacket but an excellent copy overall, spotlessly clean. Keyserling was born to a wealthy aristocratic family in the Könno Manor, Kreis Pernau in Governorate of Livonia, Russian Empire, now in Estonia. The Russian Revolution deprived him of his estate in Livonia, and with the remains of his fortune he founded the Gesellschaft für Freie Philosophie (now called "The School of Wisom)=) at Darmstadt. The mission of this school was to bring about the intellectual reorientation of Germany. He was the first to use the term Führerprinzip. One of Keyserling's central claims was that certain "gifted individuals" were "born to rule" on the basis of Social Darwinism. In 1918 his luck changed when… Read More

Octavo. 428, 17[1], pp. Publisher's blind ruled green cloth with gilt spine lettering, brown endpapers. A very good copy. Merited a 23-page review in the July 1963 issue of The North American Review. "Mr. Kimball combines in an unusual degree literary talent, and a knowledge of mercantile affairs as transacted in the daily life of city and country. He has, consequently, been able to inaugurate a new style of novel, and may fairly be considered the creator of the Romance of Business. In his hands it takes a form as distinct as the naval, military, sentimental, sensational or any other class into which the popular fictions of the day naturally fall."
