Description:
With an introduction by Michael Shmith. Melbourne : Macmillan Art Publishing, 2005. Narrow folio, blind lettered cloth with inset illustration, pp. 144, illustrated. Completed over a 58-year period, The Great Music Makers series offers both an insight into the development of Kahan’s artistic practice and a visual record of some of the greatest music makers of our time. The drawings represent the culmination of a lifetime of astute observation, refined draughtsmanship and an appreciation of the transience of the musical performance. Whether through the subtle gesture of pencil on paper, or the more assured markings of pen or ink, each drawing brings to life a well-known Australian or international composer, conductor, musician or singer, captured by Kahan during a dress rehearsal, performance, or chance encounter. As Kahan’s artistic career developed, capturing life in motion became a recurrent theme. From designing fanciful costumes for film and stage, to documenting the veracities of life as a… Read More

Description:
Göttingen : Steidl, 2020. Two volumes, octavo, 15.9 x 22.5 cm, cloth in illustrated slipcase, pp. 752, illustrated. New copy. The powerful religious sites of Uluru and Kata Tjuta in the Northern Territory of Australia have been of deep interest to the artist Anish Kapoor since he first visited them in the 1980s. At Uluru he found a landscape of monumental scale which contained intimate and ritually resonant sites. A landscape of hollows and voids which he has read as resonant of primal or even “original” structure. Kapoor describes Uluru as “an object with a perforated skin which lends itself to mythic meaning.” On his visit in 1991, Kapoor noted in his sketchbook “a white bump on a white wall.” He later made the sculpture When I am Pregnant (1992), describing it as “an object in a state of becoming.” The idea of the proto-object is central to Kapoor’s work. In 2012 Kapoor returned to Uluru and Kata Tjuta. These two photographic volumes trace his journey. They reveal through his… Read More

Description:
New York : Harry Abrams, 1966.  Thick quarto, lettered hessian, original acetate wrapper, pp. 341, extensively illustrated. A little staining along the top edge, else a very good copy. An important book of experimental art in the 1960s. 'In the 1950s, artist and lecturer Allan Kaprow coined the term “happening” to describe many performances and events. These included a number of theatrical productions that were traditionally scripted and invited only limited audience interaction. Above all, happenings emphasized the organic connection between art and its environment. The Guggenheim Museum Library Special Collections and Archives holds ephemera and materials influential to this movement. One of the movement’s major texts, Assemblage, environments & happenings is in the special collections. It features Kaprow’s theory of the evolution of abstract expressionist painting into Neo-Dada, assemblage, environments, and happenings of the early 1960s. This rare book documents works by Kaprow and… Read More

Milan : Skira Editore S.p.A, 2022. Quarto, illustrated boards, pp. 248, illustrated. Text by Dodie Kazanjian and Sophia Al Maria. New copy, sealed in shrink-wrap. Edited by curator Masimilliano Gioni, this book focuses in particular on Koons’ art as seen in relation to contemporary American culture. With his aesthetics of plenitude and his pop-up dreams of social mobility and acceptance, throughout his career Koons has composed a “fantasy America […] custom-made from art and schmaltz and emotions” -to use Warhol’s description of his own interpretation of American culture. Through the inclusion of source materials, personal recollections and biographical narratives, the book reads each of Koons’ celebrated series through the prism of his biography and the ways in which his individual history intersects with that of his country and culture. Ranging from his upbringing in rural Pennsylvania to his fascination for popular culture and vernacular art, the publication composes an… Read More
