A little hard to interpret, but perhaps Charlotte was a concerned property owner rather than a conservationist? Kaufman is a conservationist (who may now have property rights/free-market leanings), and Pilkey is a marine geologist. Later printed in paperback by Duke University Press. Kennedy, with respect and best wishes, Richard Rhodes, 1970." Ted Kennedy, of Massachusetts, went on to be the fourth-longest-continuously-serving senator in United States history. The Inland Ground is literary journalist Richard Rhodes's first book, including such classic essays as "Watching the Animals." He would go on to win the Pulitzer Prize in nonfiction, the National Book Award, and the National Book Critics Circle Award (the triple crown) for his 1986 900-page work of literary journalism, The Making of the Atomic Bomb. He is also widely known for his great biography of John James Audubon. Rhodes was born in Kansas City, Kansas, in 1938. Near fine with a few bumps to boards and faint soiling to lower board edges, in a near fine jacket with one dark streak to upper front panel and a few bits of wear to corners.

This is the first printing of the mass market paperback, from September 1963 as stated on the copyright page. Not signed, but her ownership ink stamp with her name ("F.E. Kerouac Parker") and address in Grosse Pointe, Michigan (where she was raised, and to which she returned) is on the first page. Edie appears as Judie Smith in Kerouac's novel The Town and the City, as Elly in Visions of Cody, as Edna "Johnnie" Palmer in Vanity of Duluoz, and as herself in "The Original Scroll"--the unedited edition of On the Road. Her memoir You'll Be Okay: My Life with Jack Kerouac was published posthumously in 2007 by City Lights. A good/very good book with a slanted spine and creasing to spine, and a bump to the lower rear corner of the page block/back cover. NY: Viking Press, 1950. First Edition. Hardcover. Very good/Very good. An association copy: signed by Gary Snyder on the copyright page. Apparently when asked to sign the book, Snyder replied, slyly, "But I didn't write it." He then relented, though, and out of deference to Kerouac signed the copyright page instead of the title page. The book is a roman a clef,  and Snyder is the main character, Japhy Ryder, who models Buddhist practice and eventually leads the narrator up the Matterhorn in the Eastern Sierra for a sublime experience. Very good with some light rubbing to board edges, a drip stain to top face of text block, toning to pages. In a very good jacket with rubbing and slight loss to corners and spine ends. An iconic book and scarce signed by Japhy.

Kessler was Dillard's student as Wesleyan, and she had nice things to say about his subsequent acclaimed novel, *Birds in Fall*: "Once in a blue moon a book like Birds in Fall comes along: a wise, sly, and beautifully written novel. Kessler's story, ostensibly about a plane crash, turns out to be a much deeper, much richer retelling of an ancient myth. Mysterious, oracular, this breathtaking book contains multitudes." This book won the John Burroughs Medal for natural history writing in 1960. An early book on urban nature. Better known as a sportswriter, broadcaster, and radio personality, Kieran was quietly also a dedicated naturalist and this book is a nice legacy on that front. A very near fine book with a touch of rubbing in spots to edges of cloth boards; in a very good jacket with edge wear, a few short tears, and darkening to spine..
