Puebla, Tipografia de Pedro Alarcon y Ca., 1863.. FIRST and ONLY EDITION. 4°, disbound, lower board still attached, upper board and spine present. Final line on a few pages shaved, but still legible. Good condition. From the library of Sir Thomas Phillipps, with initials "MHC" on the pastedown of the upper board. 28 pp. *** FIRST and ONLY EDITION. Provenance: Sir Thomas Phillipps, 1st Baronet (1792-1872) was an English antiquary and book collector who amassed the largest collection of manuscript material in the 19th century, due to his severe condition of bibliomania. He was an illegitimate son of a textile manufacturer and inherited a substantial estate, which he spent almost entirely on vellum manuscripts, and, when out of funds, borrowed heavily to buy manuscripts, thereby putting his family deep into debt. Phillipps began his collecting while still at Rugby and continued at Oxford. Eventually he acquired some 40,000 printed books and 60,000 manuscripts, arguably the largest collection a single… Read More

Porto and Braga, Livraria Internacional / Ernesto Chardron, 1871.. First Edition in Portuguese. 8°, original pink printed wrappers (faded and with minor stains). Overall in very good condition. 24 pp. *** First and Only Edition in Portuguese? Laboulaye (Paris, 1811-Paris, 1883) was a great admirer of the United States Constitution; his 3-volume history of the United States was published in 1855-1866. During the American Civil War he was a strong proponent of the abolition of slavery. In 1865 it was Laboulaye who proposed the monument to freedom that was designed by his friend, Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi, and dedicated as the Statue of Liberty. After the Paris Commune of 1870, Laboulaye was chosen to represent the département of the Seine, and helped establish the Third Republic. This essay was written to the director of the Journal de Lyon in response to the latter's question of what system of government would best guarantee the independence of France from foreign domination and also protect the… Read More

Lisbon, Miguel Manescal, 1669.. First and Only Edition. 4°, contemporary mottled calf, spine richly gilt, slight worming to upper joint, somewhat worn. Woodcut headpieces and initials. Some light browning. Minor marginal worming (mostly repaired) without loss. 267 pp. *** FIRST and ONLY EDITION, variant issue, without the licenses printed on the verso of LL2. In 1662 the irresponsible D. Afonso VI took the throne of Portugal, ousting his mother D. Luisa de Gusmão, who had ruled as regent since D. João IV's death in 1656. In November 1667, however, D. Afonso was imprisoned by his brother D. Pedro, who was named Prince Regent by the Cortes some months later and remained regent until his brother finally died (still under lock and key) in 1683. Pedro also, after a hasty annulment, married the French princess who had been D. Afonso's wife. To justify D. Pedro's ascension, Corrêa de Lacerda gives all the juicy gossip about D. Afonso's life, including the fever that left him partially paralyzed at age… Read More
