The author was a Senior High Commander in the Soviet Army between 1937 and 1940, and this was a brave book to publish at the height of Stalin's Show Trials, The book was obviously approved of by Stalin as Mekhlis survived the purges and died in 1953. The contents are obviously pro Soviet Communism and extol the benefits real or imaginary of the Soviet system over that of the Capitlist West.

Light shelf wear to edges and with some light handling marks to boards. Some foxing throughout. 246pp 21cm x 14cm approx. The authors travels through Utkala, now forming the northern and eastern part of the Indian State of Odisha, which had significant religious significance The book also covers a little religious folk lore and appreciations of native character. The author and his wife were Christian Missionaries in India at the beginning of the twentieth century. Illustrated with black and white plates plus map.

Very well preserved full leather binding of this edition with gilt motif to front board in Latin of the Glasgow Academy. Gilt titles to spine with five raised bands. Very minor rubbing only to leather and overall externally in near fine condition. Marbled edges to text block and marbled end papers. School Prize label to front paste down dated 1877. Some foxing heavy in places (see photo of Mont Blanc) but the vast majority of the engravings remain unaffected. Overall an extremely good attractive edition of this work. Written at the turn of the 19th/20th century, Leonidas was an exponent of Stage Hypnotism and psychic entertainment, and while he acknowledges that the acts around that time were largely a lot of bunkum with plants in the audience etc, it is a comprehensive account of his methods and is perhaps the most complete book on the subject written at that time.
