Complete run of first editions of this influential and avant-garde quarterly literary journal published by the Neurotica Publishing Company (9 volumes 1948-1952), edited by Jay Irving Landesman except volume 9 which was edited by G. [Gershon] Legman who also served as Associate Editor for volume 5. Generally the staple-bound volumes are in near fine condition with light edge wear and minor soiling and rubbing. Volumes 8 and 9 show greater soiling and fading to the spine of volume 8. Cover art by noted designer Alvin Lustig. Black wrappers with black punch strips to spine. Some soiling. Text is a copy of the original. Very light toning to edges. Fine Condition. Includes three typed letters signed and one mailing envelope. Letters have light wear and were inserted into book. The Doubleday letter is larger than book hence the right edge is chipped. Sol Lesser (1890-1980) was an American film producer from the silent era through the late 1950's; best known for producing 13 Tarzan movies. Lesser also produced Our Town, Stage Door Canteen and Kon-Tiki which won an Academy award for best documentary film for 1951. All told he worked on 83 movies. The Observator was a dialogue-style newspaper written by Sir Roger L'Estrange, published from April 13, 1681 to March 9, 1687. The copies in this lot are Number 16, published May 25, 1681; Number 33, published July 13, 1681; and Number 215, published September 30, 1682. Roger L'Estrange (1616-1704) was an English author, pamphleteer, courtier, and press censor. [Rhode Island] CDV of Idawalley (Ida) Zorada Lewis, Famed Lighthouse Keeper and Lifesaver, circa 1870's Face of the card has light foxing and soiling with pin hole going through the I in Ida. Some soiling and foxing to verso. Good Condition. CDV of Ida Lewis (1842-1911) from the studio of Manchester Bros., Providence, Rhode Island. Idawalley Zorada Lewis was the lighthouse keeper at Lime Rock Light, off the coast of Newport, RI. Her family moved to the "the rock" in 1857 where she helped her ailing father, and later mother, tend the lighthouse. Ida was formally named official keeper in 1879. A strong swimmer and rower, Ida is credited with saving the lives of 18 people. In 1924, Rhode Island legislature officially changed the name of Lime Rock to Ida Lewis Rock in honor of her extraordinary keeper services. The portrait, with a typical studio backdrop, shows Ida Lewis holding an oar--not your normal photo prop, but perfect for Ida Lewis.

Large colorful map of the underground workings at Cripple Creek, Colorado from 1905 as compiled from various mining maps of the various companies active at Cripple Creek. Published in 1905 in United States Geological Survey Professional Paper No. 54. Plate III. Cripple Creek was the locale for the last great Colorado gold rush when gold was discovered in 1890. By 1900, the Cripple Creek mining district was home to almost 500 mines and multiple lawsuits of competing claims. A quick look at this map shows the many competing tunnels of the competing companies. By 1910, the region had produced 22.4 million ounces of gold.
