Luguduni (Lyon): Gryphium, 1541. Early Edition. Fine. Early printed edition of this classical biographical study of ancient philosophers. Commonly translated to, "Lives and Opinions of Eminent Philosophers." In Latin, from the translation of Ambrogio Traversari with some Greek sections. In contemporary/early vellum cover with five raised bands and a gilded panel with abbreviated author and title on spine. General toning and rubbing to covers, very minor considering age. Tie-ins visible (by design) on front and rear at hinge. Solid and square binding. All edges stained red. Various degrees of internal toning and some minor and very old staining - all text is easly and wonderfully legible. Marginal notes in several early hands and inks. Engraved capital letters. Bumps and light fraying to edges and some small scratches to covers Interior toned, but otherwise clean and clear. Contains: "Agamemnon" by Aeschylus and translated by Lewis Campbell; "Oedipus the King" by Sophocles and translated by F. Storr; "Medea" by Euripides and translated by A. S. Way; "The Frogs" by Aristophanes and translated by John Hookham Frere.

First edition, first issue with 'Published, February, 1915' on copyright page and in original, scarce, jacket.Illustrated by John Wolcott Adams. Jacket is housed in a protective sheet which is unclipped with some chipping at corner turn ins, and at the head and tail of the spine. Overall, a very good jacket with a clear illustration. Bound in decorative blue cloth with a winged sword and gilded writing to the front and spine. Gentle bumps at lower corners and at head and tail of spine. Solid and square. Small and short inscription to ffep and smaller to rear pastedown. The interior is clean and clear. Finely rebound in Bath, England. Yellow polished leather over boards with gilded double rule borders, five slightly raised bands to spine, red and green labels, gilding all over. All edges finely gilt. Marbled end papers. Original covers bound in at the rear including front, spine, and rear covers. Solid and square binding. Interior lightly toned, otherwise clean and clear.

Based on the Danish translation of 1934 and revised by the author. In the original, unclipped (8s. 6d. net), jacket in protective sheet. General wear with chipping, short tears, toning, and rubbing [though there are issues, I admit to finding them appropriate for both the imagery of the jacket and the content of the book]. Bound in red cloth over boards with black lettering on the front and spine. Darkening at edges, some rubbing, and one slightly bumped corner. Red top-stain. Short inscription on front pastedown and former seller notes in pencil on ffep. Gilt fore edges. One page has a punched stamp from a former library. Cloth bookmark present but detached. Covers slightly warped. Senault Jean Froncois was Superior General of the Oratory of Jesus and a famous preacher. In the first part of of this book, Senault, writes about passions in a general sense. In the second part, Senault, discusses specific passions, such as love and hate or joy and despair.  Pages: 595 Dimensions: 3 x 5¼ x 1½ .
