Ink script title in an old hand on the spine. = A very rare first edition of a popular early work on tulips and tulip cultivation, published anonymously, but known to have been written by Charles de La Chesnée-Monstereul, about whom little is known. Hyde describes him merely as floriculturist, and indeed he was a prolific writer on flower bulb cultivation, and tulips in particular. According to OCLC, 13 editions - all in French - were published between 1678 and 1697 and held by 25 WorldCat member libraries worldwide. The last edition is dated 1697, and has a different, floral, vignette on the title. Of this first edition there are no auction records. Large 8vo. 64 pp. Printed title. = Important contribution to the theory solutions in gasses and fluids by the Dutch chemist, physicist, and mathematician Johannes Jacobus van Laar (1860-1938). Some 12 years later Van Laar described the equation named after him which described the phase equilibria of liquid mixtures and of which this publication lays the foundations. Published in the Archives du Musée Teyler - the oldest museum in the Netherlands - série II(VI)I. Uncut. Slight soiling to issue's title, otherwise a very good, unmarked copy.

Four proof plates (ca. 43.0 x 33.0 cm; printed surfaces ca. 27.0 x 24.0 cm) showing the Parisian and Berlin beau monde at its most decadent. = Swift and lively scenes of Paris, around 1925 - and one situated in Berlin - with people behaving ‘vulgarly’ and breaking the rules: old, rich fat men openly eyeing a virgin and tossing change around; ladies wrestling before an utterly bored night club audience; a ‘hot’ jazz club with young women dancing intimately with exotic strangers; and - perhaps more innocent - a nudist camp near Berlin; all drawn in lively style by Chas Laborde (1886-1941), who was in the thick of it. The plates show the often beautifully coloured species: of one species, the author remarks "cette espèce est superbe" (see p. 633). The French anatomist and zoologist Félix Joseph Henri de Lacaze-Duthiers (1821-1901 or - according to Nissen ZBI, p. 238 - 1902) was the founder and editor of this scientific journal, and founder of the famous marine biological stations at Roscoff (Atlantic) and Banyuls sur Mer (Mediterranean). Preserved in a burgundy cloth covered clamshell box (30.4 x 25.2 x 9.2 cm) with printed label. = Unique collection of three important works, including manuscript corrections, by Felix Joseph Henri de Lucaze-Duthiers (1821-1901), one of the great French marine invertebrate and embryogenetic scholars from the 19th century and founder of the Archives de Zoologie Expérimentale. Lacaze-Duthiers studied medicine in Paris and was assistant of Ducrotay de Blainville and Henri Milne-Edwards. He succeeded Achille Valenciennes as professor of the Mollusca, Vermes and zoophytes at the Paris Muséum national d'Histoire naturelle in 1865, and in 1871 he was elected member of the Académie des Sciences. Spine with four raised bands. = Two papers by the German zoologist Friedrich Lachmund (1635-1676), both illustrated, on the skeletons of a turtle, and of a bat [pp. 240-242]. A very early examples of such osteological/anatomical studies. The papers by Lachmund are complete, the whole volume lacks a few plates on unrelated topics. Paper in a few sections toned and with a rather vague, marginal dampstain, otherwise in a good condition. Lachmund not mentioned by Adler (yet). Not in Cat. BM(NH).

Paris, Furne et Cie., 1855. Two parts in two. Large 8vo (25.8 x 16.7 cm). xii, 668, 647 pp.; 36 nicely hand-coloured steel-engravings, tissue-guarded, all after Edouard Travies. Uniform contemporary half calf over marbled boards. Spines with gilt lines and title. Marbled endpapers. = This is the second, updated edition with all the attractive hand-coloured plates after Travies, with the animals in their natural (or, sometimes, not so natural) surroundings. Attractively bound. It includes beautifully coloured plates depicting many amphibians and reptiles. Boards a bit rubbed, more so at edges. Some text sections and tissue-guards foxed but mostly in the margins and only about 12 plates, mostly in the fish section, are touched. One fish plate detached, otherwise very good. Four parts in four. 12mo (16.6 x 9.6 cm). 1,699 pp. [I (1788) 359; II (1788) 464; III (1790) 24, 432; IV (1790) 8, 408 pp.]; 48 [of 49] nicely engraved plates [I: 12; II: 15, III: 11, IV: 10] depicting amphibians and reptiles in their natural surroundings. Contemporary uniform full calf. Spines with gilt vignettes, borders and two red morocco labels each, boards with ornamental gilt borders. Marbled endpapers. = This is the smaller sized edition that was published in the same years as the first edition in quarto, published as Suite de Buffon. The last 12 pp. of volume IV contain an "Éloge du comte Buffon". The last two volumes (half the work) deal with snakes. Nissen reports 49 plates with a query. Two other, contemporary editions have 48 plates, as does this one. There is, however, no plate V in Volume IV. A nice, clean set in attractive contemporary bindings. Nissen ZBI, 2350a, 2350b.

Original printed wrappers. = A seldom-seen supplement to a work that is rare too: the main work, Le Volcan Actif de l'Ile de la Réunion et ses produits, was published in just a few hundred copies. The author, the French mineralogist, petrographer, geologist, and volcanologist Alfred [Antoine François] Lacroix (1863-1948) was a professor at the Muséum national d 'Histoire naturelle, and a secretary of the French Academy of Sciences for 34 years. The mostly aerial photos show craters. Uncut. A fine copy of a surprisingly hard to find work.

Provenance: handwritten, signed dedication by the author to Lacaze-Duthiers in the top margin of the title page. Fernand Lahille (1861-1940) was a French-Argentinian oceanographer. He moved to Argentina a few years after writing this thesis. Uncut. A rather foxed copy due to the quality of the paper. The wrappers, however, in an unusually good state.

Original blue wrappers with printed paper label pasted on front wrapper, a few parts (III; IX, XIII, XIV) disbound. = A near complete set of tis important, well-illustrated monograph, completed after 41 years by a single author, the British geologist,palaeontologist and invertebrate zoologist Philip Lake (1865-1949). Only the first part is lacking. All parts clean. Rare in any state.

Original printed front wrapper bound in. = "This monograph is devoted to a most careful study of the marine flora (excluding diatoms) of a region which, though poor in species, affords problems of great scientific interest, more especially with respect to the origin of the flora and its comparison with those of other seas" (from the review in Nature, 1908). Published on behalf of the Westpreußische Botanisch-Zoologischer Verein. Inscribed by a former owner (dated 1917) on the front flyleaf an in the front wrapper top margin. Spine top a bit chipped, two small stamps on the front endpapers with acquisition date, otherwise a very good copy. Stafleu and Cowan, 4129.

Original printed wrappers. = This work by the eminent French naturalist Jean-Baptiste de Lamarck (1744-1829) is very important for two reasons. First, it is the first work to contain observations on the geology of Australia, in particular answering the question whether a higher sea-level in past geological time was, or was not a global phenomenon. Lamarck received crucial information from the French naturalist and explorer François Péron (1775-1810), who was on board when the expedition by Baudin set sail with the ships Naturaliste and Geographe. Dispatched by Napoleon, the aim of the expedition was to investigate and possibly claim the unknown South-Land before the British. Péron sent his data before he himself and the appointed geologists of Baudin's expedition published their "official" accounts.
