First published in 1871 by Strahan & Company Limited, the present edition is from a subsequent printing (1870's-1880) edition printed by Strahan & Company Limited. Green cloth over boards with debossed borders on front and back. Gilded lettering and rules on spine. Some rubbing to edges, bumped corners, and rubbing along rims of spine. Long edge rought cut. Venice: Aedibus Aldi et Andreae Asulani Soceri (Aldine Press), 1528. Fine. A rare Aldine edition of this work which includes the Dream of Scipio, from Book VI of Cicero's De Republica, and is the most well known exceprt as it survivded in its entirety. It was Macrobe's commentary on this Dream that enabled Cicero's text to be more broadly read and carry on through the Medieval period. Illustrated with 8 diagrams in black in the text, aligning with the ideas of Macrobe who recommended the use of images to transmit knowledge. Includes a map of the world showing a neo-Platonic view, dividing the world into five distinct zone one of which is the fictitious southern Antipodes. Overall, the book is in Fine condition with a few spots on pages preceding the main text and some restoration on the first page, last page, and on leaf a2. Complete with 72 plaques, (of which two are folding) bound after the text. Engravings include a complete accounting of the Zodiac and additional means of reading the stars. In full contemporary calfskin boards, quite worn, with joints cracked, and loss at head and tail, gilt-tooled spine; small marginal waterstain at the back depicting a variety of means to reading sun dials, moon dials, and at sea. First published in 1641, it was very successful and was reprinted several times. This fourth edition is revised and enlarged; it contains at the end some chapters of stereotomy. By applying the principles of spherical trigonometry, the author indicates the methods for constructing all kinds of sundials and tracing them on all kinds of supports, but also Moon dials or methods of knowing the time at night using the stars. This is a Latin translation, abbreviated by Cornelius Scribon Grapheus, of the original published in 1555. It is very richly illustrated with woodcuts, including legendary animals and monsters. It also features what would be the first representations of skiers ever printed. 138 woodcuts in the text.
