This is a straightforward memoir, with bible thumping religion, righteous pronouncements about the evils of drink, and a realisic look at the hardships of the times.

Written in 1906, using both humor and sarcasm, this story is based on the author's personal experience as a teacher sent to Matsuyama on the island of Shikoku.
