Description:
1783. Mezzotint. Proof impression with scratched letter. Ref: CS 23 I. A young girl, kneeling before a milk-pail, attentively observes a snail creeping over ashes on a block to the right. A spaniel-like dog looks into her face. It was thought that on the morning of the !st of May, if a girl found a slug or snail and put it on a surface covered with flour or ashes, the snail would crawl out the initials of the future lover's name. Even just finding the snail was a good omen, indicating the lover will have a house of his own. The picture was inspired by a poem by John Gay. James Walker (1748-1808) was an eminent mezzotint engraver and James Northcote an important English painter.Laid loosely onton backing sheet. Small waterstains in the title area. Small rubbing on pail.

Alexander Wedderburn came from a distinguished Scottish legal family; educated at Edinburgh, he practiced law there until he entered Parliament in 1761, sitting for the Scottish seat of Ayr Burghs. An ambitious lawyer, Wedderburn viewed his parliamentary interests as subservient to his advancement in the legal profession. He served as Solicitor General and Attorney General before receiving a peerage and an appointment as Chief Justice of Common Pleas. He was appointed Lord Chancellor in 1801.Francesco Bartolozzi (1727-1815)was the son of a goldsmith, studied painting in Florence, trained as an engraver in Venice and began his career in Rome. In 1763 Richard Dalton, art dealer and librarian to George III, met him and invited him to London, promising him a post as engraver to the king. Bartolozzi moved to London the following year, and remained for thirty-five…
