Phyllis Neilson-Terry (1892-1977) was born in London, the daughter of actors Julia Neilson and Fred Terry, into the third generation of the Terry family, a noted British theatrical dynasty. She was educated in Paris and at the Royal Academy of Music in London, where she studied to be a singer. She made her stage debut at age 16, took over a leading role when her mother fell ill the following year, and began to make waves. The Danakil area explored here "forms an irregular rectangle, some 400 miles long from north to south, by 150 miles wide, and is an upraised sea -bed." This book recounts the expedition that traversed the Danakil from south to north. "During our journey of three and a half months we marched some 800 miles...In these pages I have related the vicissitudes of our journey as I wrote them in my journal at the time of their occurrence.
