Loose original albumen photographs of various sizes, all mounted on period card. The majority of photos are with period pencil captions in German or Italian on the mounts; some are captioned or numbered in negative, over twenty with blind-stamped studio names on the mounts. Photos are housed in a period dark brown folder with sheep boards, and cloth-covered flaps; gilt lettered title "Italien 1867/68 " on the front board; both boards are with protective brass fittings. Folder rubbed and worn on extremities, one photo with a left corner missing, several images slightly faded, but overall a very good collection.Impressive collection of 78 early albumen studio photographs of Italian cities collected and thoroughly annotated by a German tourist in 1867-68. Pencil markings on the title page, mild water stains on the lower margins of the text leaves, ink stamp of a Soviet bookshop on the last page, otherwise a very good copy.First edition. Very rare. This early work related to the Great Game describes one of the first Russian travels to the Khanate of Kokand, which was little known before. The first edition quickly became a rarity in Russia; the second commented edition was published only in 1968.The book was written by Filipp Nazarov, a translator of the Special Siberian Corps of the Russian army.
