Description:
[Edinburgh?]: Printed in the year, 1791. 4to, pp. 38. Stitched as issued with original marbled paper covers (with no backstrip). Some creasing to corners and edges, a few short tears to edges of wrappers. A scarce, privately printed pamphlet providing arguments from history and use that the Prince of Wales (later George IV) held the titles of Duke of Rothesay, Earl of Carrick, etc., in the Peerage of Scotland. It evidently answers a charge that these had lapsed - perhaps stemming from the regency crisis of 1789, combined with the preference for Prince of Wales as the heir apparent’s title following the Union, or else perhaps the dispute goes all the way back to the absence of a holder of the titles between 1751 (the death of Frederick Louis) and 1762 (the birth of the future George IV). ESTC locates copies in the BL, House of Lords, and NLS (x3) only in the UK, plus just the Huntington elsewhere. ESTC T83694.

London: Printed for B. Crosby and Co., 1805. 3 vols, 8vo, pp. viii (recte vii), [v], [7]-22, [v]-viii (but misfolded), 232, *233-*252, 233-434, [2]; [viii], 484; [iii]-viii, [2], 548. Untrimmed and mostly unopened in original blue paper boards backed in white paper, spines lettered in ink. A little spotting, first few leaves of vol. 3 dampmarked. Somewhat soiled, several joints strained, spines browned and chipped, dampmark to front board of vol. 3. A scarce set, dated to 1805 by the BL, one of three holdings listed in COPAC. In original boards bearing some signs of a slightly troubled production: the first volume duplicates a misnumbered introductory section from the third, while the second volume has a title page designating it as from the second edition in 2 volumes from 1794; the other 2 title pages are undated cancels, of ‘a new edition, corrected.’

Valencia: Por Joseph y Thomas de Orga, 1783. 4to, pp. [xvi], 185, [1]. Contemporary speckled sheep, marbled endpapers. Some light spotting, a few marginal stains. Rebacked, hinges relined, corners worn, a few scrapes to boards. Booklabel of Thomas Seabrooke to front pastedown, old library label to verso of flyleaf, with an ownership inscription dated [18]61 below it. A significant and scarce work on the production of silk in Valencia, by the vicar of Foyos, Francisco Ortells y Gombau. Following the reforms and inventions of Jacques de Vaucanson in France (including his anticipation of Jacquard with a punch-card automated loom), Spanish authorities attempted to revitalise the local silk industry by forcing adoption of his methods and machinery, including the grant of Vaucanson wheels to those who raised and spun enough silk. The Board of Commerce and Agriculture of Valencia went on to encourage local priests to promote the use of Vaucanson’s method, with Ortells y Gombau’s… Read More

Description:
Edinburgh: Reprinted by A. Neill & Co, 1801. 8vo, pp. 57, [1]. Disbound. A touch of faint spotting. A scarce reprinting of this translation from Ovid into Scots, by Robert Forbes. Little is known of him - he seems to have been born in Buchan but plied his trade as a hosier in London. Evidently an educated man who ‘possessed a large fund of the humorous,’ he also published another excerpt from Ovid and a few original pieces (Walker, The Bards of Bon-Accord 1375-1860, 1887). This edition was also issued as part of a collection of macaronic verse and other translations between Scots and Latin.
