Ordered by the Council to be printed, 14th March 1856. Melbourne : John Ferres, Government printer, 1856. Foolscap folio (340 mm), pp iv, 3; a fine example. The Ballarat Outbreak Petition was submitted to the Legislative Council in December 1855. Its 752 signatories demanded compensation for citizens who lived in the vicinity of the Eureka Stockade who had had their property destroyed or damaged during the riots of early December 1854. The Chairman of the Select Committee appointed to review the Petition was none other than Eureka hero Peter Lalor, who had been elected to the Victorian Legislative Council in November 1855 as Member for the new district of Ballaarat. Lalor remained in this role until March 1856 - around the time of the present report - and in November 1856, under the new, more democratic constitution Lalor was elected unopposed to the Legislative Assembly seat of North Grenville (Ballarat West).

Single parchment sheet, 330 x 200 mm; manuscript in ink, densely written on 1 page, the entries covering the period January 1838 to April 1844, written in several different hands and in different locations in Van Diemen's Land; the prisoner's physical description and background are entered in the upper margin recto; light staining and rubbing in sections, but for the most part legible; three original horizontal folds, the outer side annotated with the file name 1060 John Jones. The official convict record of John Jones, a cabinetmaker from Manchester who was given a life sentence for stealing a cow.  Jones was aged 21 at the time of his transportation to VDL. He was convicted at the Lancaster Quarter Session on 3 July 1837 (this document records the year 1836, in error). He arrived in VDL per transport Neptune, on 19 January 1838. Single parchment sheet, 300 x 250 mm; manuscript in ink, densely written across 1 1/2 pages, the entries covering the period August 1834 to July 1845, written in many different hands and in different locations in Van Diemen's Land; the prisoner's physical description and background are entered in the upper margin recto, and beside it a clerk's annotations record the total of 6 years added to Watson's sentence resulting from punishments for four major transgressions committed while serving his term; rubbed and faded in sections, but for the most part legible; three original horizontal folds, the outer side annotated with the file name 1787 Thomas Watson, and in pencil 'Not at Ross' (possibly a reference to his absconding from there in 1844). The official convict record of Thomas Watson is a document that exemplifies the chilling brutality of the Van Diemen's Land penal system.
