Bastille Day, celebrated on July 14, has been the French national day since 1880. July 14, 1889, is a very special day. The centenary of the French Revolution was celebrated during the ongoing Universal Exposition, which opened its doors on May 15 around the Eiffel Tower, inaugurated on March 31. A lavish banquet and a ball were organized at the Palais de l'Industrie, and a grand fireworks display was offered by the City of Paris, shot by the Ruggieri company (fireworkers for King Louis XV from 1739) who had already launched the first fireworks from the Eiffel Tower on July 14, 1887, before its completion.
