Description:
New York: Charles Scribner's Sons Book. Good. Hardcover. 1892. First Separate Printing, 53pp, illustrated by W. T. Smedley. Decorative cover design. Light to moderate soiling, else G. MARSE CHAN appeared first in Page's first book, IN OLE VIRGINIA. Thomas Nelson Page, (1853-1922), was born in the ancestral plantation in Hanover County, Virginia, of an aristocratic family. Two of his great-grandfathers were governors of Virginia and one was a signer of the Declaration of Independence. But the family was financially ruined by the Civil War and Reconstruction; and, it is said that Page drew on the romantic notions of the pre-war south, coupled with the gallantly borne misfortunes of the post war period, for much of his writing. His writing is sentimental by today's standards, but he had a good ear and is remembered for his depiction of black dialect..

No price on the dj but doesn't appear to be a Book Club edition. From the dj: "When George Papashvily landed in this country from Georgia in Russia he thought of America as a place where anything can happen - and in twenty years he has not changed his mind. It is possible to describe the book in a dozen ways, all of them true. It is the story of the making of an American. It is an adventure story. It is a book of delicious humor. It is folklore. It is an illustration, in vivid colors, of the things that American democracy has accomplished and also of the ways in which it has occasionally failed.".
