Dorchester, Mass.: Walter Baker & Co., Ltd., 1910. 12mo, pp. 62 + 6 double-sided colour plates, three images with gold or silver foil. Stapled in original embossed pictorial wrappers printed in colour with gold foil. Central bifolium loose. Wrappers somewhat creased and rubbed, tiny edge tears, staples rusted. A charming recipe pamphlet devoted to chocolate and cacao, with contributions from a dozen women. The introduction remarks upon the growing popularity of chocolate, and asserts that ‘A cup of chocolate made with sugar and milk is in itself a fair breakfast.’

Contemporary ownership inscription of Edw. Emerson to flyleaf. An attractive copy of these scarce parts of a reissue by Walker of Harrison’s Classicks, a series reprinting periodicals in cheaper double-column format. The volumes, sold initially in parts, were all available separately; this one contains the Idler (Birmingham, BL, & 5 in USA/Australia in ESTC) and William Melmoth’s ‘Letters of Sir Thomas Fitzosborne’ (BL, Columbia, Catholic Institute of Sydney).

London: Printed for B. Law... and C. Law, 1797. 12mo, pp. xii, 358, [2, ads]. Contemporary sheep, spine divided by raised bands. A touch of foxing. Small loss to head of spine and small puncture to rear board, front hinge beginning to crack. The ninth and final 18th-century edition of this long-lasting French grammar from the French educational author Jean Baptiste Perrin (d. 1798), who moved to Dublin and made his living teaching French to the Irish gentry. It remained in use well into the 19th century and had crossed the Atlantic as well, becoming the first French grammar published in the USA in 1779. As with most practical books of this kind surviving copies are scarce: ESTC locates half a dozen of this edition in the UK and four more in the USA. ESTC T68498; Alston XII 440.

Norimbergiae [Nuremberg]: Sumtibus b.Balth: Schmidii haeredum, 1765. Small 4to, pp. [xvi], 64. Each page entirely engraved including the lettering, plus decorative head- and tail-pieces. Nineteenth-century marbled paper wrappers, paper label to spine. Edges toned and a bit spotted, one leaf with a small abrasion to blank margin. Wrappers worn at extremities, spine chipped and front wrapper loosening, no flyleaves. A scarce German imitation of Pine’s Horace, produced entirely without type - each page engraved, text and illustration alike. Only a handful of copies are located by Library Hub, with a similar number in Worldcat. It even has some textual interest as the first edition to use a collation from a manuscript in the collection of H. W. Ebner von Eschenbach. Rubbed and darkened, a touch of wear to spine ends. Ownership inscription of Franciscus (surname rubbed out) to flyleaf. A scarce edition, unusual for containing only Persius’s small body of work (though with annotation substantial enough to make a sizeable volume).

London: Printed by E. Cave, for the Author, 1730. 8vo, pp. xxx, [ii], 177, [39]. Several woodcut illustrations within the text. Contemporary sprinkled sheep, boards bordered with a double gilt rule. A few spots, one small wormtrack in lower gutter at beginning. Neatly rebacked, some pitting to boards and tidy restoration to edges. Purchase inscription to flyleaf: 'Bot at Mr Caves Sale Apr. 1819'. A rare translation of the satires of Persius (somewhat unusual to find without Juvenal's works), in facing pages of Latin verse and English prose. Little seems to be recorded of John Senhouse, though the title-page indicates that he moved from Seascale in Cumbria to Penzance sometime before 1730. The purchase note is intriguing: Edward Cave, who printed the volume the year before he founded the Gentleman's Magazine, died in 1754; his nephew Richard continued to be involved in his business but died in 1766; it is not clear which Cave's could have taken place in 1819. The second edition and first in a single volume of Thomas Brewster’s translation of Persius which was issued in 6 separate parts in 1741; Brewster had published a translation of the second satire alone in 1733. Sometime folded in 12 sections, folds chipped, torn and worn with slight loss, a little soiled, a few ink spatters to reverse. Slightly later manuscript note to rear. A petition to change the route of the proposed turnpike road into Selkirk from one running via Back Brae to a route running along Shaw Park. It has 198 signatures and per a manuscript note to rear, was ‘read by A. Lang to the several{?] meeting of Road Trustees and prayer granted on 30 Dec. 1830’.

The first edition of this lasting and important translation of Plutarch’s Lives, frequently reprinted throughout the nineteenth century. This was the first translation of Plutarch into English done from the original Greek, and though criticised for its prose style, it became the standard version, displacing the one published under Dryden’s name in the 17th century. Robinson to flyleaf. The seventh surviving printing of this textbook, initially published in 1635 and edited by Ralph Winterton from an Estienne edition. It remained in use well into the eighteenth century. ESTC R31123.

Some minor spotting, a few leaves creased. Gift inscription to half-title: 'J. Ahern, the gift of his friend Wm. H. Sidell, 1827'. A scarce volume of love lyrics including translations from Catullus and Ovid and imitations of epigrams from the Greek Anthology. The editor signs the preface 'I.I.M.' and describes the author as 'a native of another hemisphere' raised 'under the genial influence of a more southern sun', who was 16 on his first visit to Britain, and 19 at the time of publication - the same age as the editor. This has more than a whiff of literary invention, and in fact the Trinity College Dublin copy contains a manuscript note attributing the work to Eaton Stannard Barrett (1785-1820).
