Bound in mottled grey cloth, gilt titling to the spine. This copy is in very good condition (some light rubbing of the boards). Several of the pre-WW2 Shell Guides can be found in this grey cloth binding, and opinion is divided as to why the books were bound up this way. The most convincing suggestion I have heard is that they were used as publisher's rep's samples. This book is in a slightly larger format than the more commonly seen softcover issue, which measures 23cm by 18cm.

There is some foxing to the preliminary pages and the edges of the text block, and an ownership inscription; overall, the book is in good to very good condition. The dustwrapper is in good condition (edges chipped, price-clipped). The dustwrapper has now been put in a mylar cover to protect it.
