Each volume 5.75ins x 4ins. Volume one: lvi, 281pp plus 11pp plates. Includes a frontis portrait by Frank Brangwyn. Volume two: xi, (i), 233ppp plus 6pp plates (plus 1 plate within the prelims). Volume three: xiv, 325pp plus 10pp plates (plus 1 plate within the prelims). Thus in total 30 plates. Volume one has a stain mark to the rear board. a few pages in each volume have been carelessly opened. Rubbing to edge of spines. Overall a G+ set.

Blue cloth boards, gilt lettering to spine, gilt crest to front cover, no dustwrapper. 10ins x 7.75ins, endpapers as maps, 240pp. Illustrations within the text including 5pp in colour depicting heraldic shields and regimental badges. Although described as a new edition on the title page it should be noted that there are a geat many changes from the 1939 edition including different maps on the endpapers, different illustrations within the text and most of the text having been revised. Previous owners name and address to top of front pastedown, also pencil notes with page number references. Spine faded to a pale blue and the lettering to spine is rather dull. G+.

Contained in a plain black slipcase. 9ins x 6ins, [vi], 404pp. 16 full page wood engravings by Philip Ross within the text. Paper boards a little rubbed otherwise VG in like slipcase.
