1865. Steel engraving. 250mm by 155mm (sheet). 'Jenner' by William Calder Marshall is a bronze statue from 1862. It is now in the Italian Garden in Kensington Gardens, London. Edward Anthony Jenner (1749 -1823) was an English physician and scientist from Berkeley, Gloucestershire, who was the pioneer of smallpox vaccine. He is often called "the father of immunology", and his work is said to have "saved more lives than the work of any other man".

1850. Steel-engraving. 315mm by 245mm (sheet). In August 1812 Goulburn became under-secretary for the colonies under Bathurst and remained in that post until December 1821. During his term as under-secretary the Colonial Office was firmly established within the framework of the British administration. Goulburn in New South Wales was named by surveyor James Meehan after Henry Goulburn, and the name was ratified by Governor Lachlan Macquarie. Holl was an English engraver and the son of prominent engraver William Holl the Elder (c1771-1838), to whom he was apprenticed.Light crease lower right corner of sheet, outside the image area.

Sir William Jackson Hooker, FRS (1785 -1865) was an English systematic botanist and organiser, and botanical illustrator. He held the post of Regius Professor of Botany at Glasgow University, and was the first Director of the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew. He enjoyed the friendship and support of Sir Joseph Banks for his exploring, collecting and organising work. His son, Joseph Dalton Hooker, succeeded him to the Directorship of Kew Gardens.In Australia, Lawrence and Gunn in Tasmania, Drummond in Western Australia, Mueller and Adamson in Victoria, and others, sent copious material to Kew. Hooker published tirelessly, including many descriptions of Australian plants, particularly in the journals which he edited, Botanical Miscellany and The Journal of Botany.

1801. Stipple engraving. 455mm by 535mm (platemark). Depicts Act II Scene VII - The Seven Ages, The Fifth Age. John Boydell (1719-1804) commissioned paintings of scenes from Shakespeare from leading British artists for his Shakespeare Gallery, a phenomenally successful project credited with changing the course of English painting by creating a market for historical and literary works. Boydell issued the first set of engravings based on the paintings in 1791, then published a nine-volume folio edition in 1802, and two-volume elephant folios of all the engravings based on the paintings in the gallery in 1803. Slight cockling to the sheet.

1801. Copper-line engraving. 215mm by 170mm (image). Huddart's (1741-1816) field was hydrography (the surveying and charting of bodies of water). He was with the East India Company for ten years, during which time he made charts of Sumatra and the Indian coast. He made his fortune from the manufacture of rope for the shipping industry. He is shown here holding compasses or dividers, used in mapmaking, with a globe on the desk beside him. Trimmed just within platemark at top of the sheet. Slight foxing in title area.

1844. Mixed method engraving. 580mm by 700mm (platemark). Sir Edwin Henry Landseer was an English painter, well known for his paintings of animals - particularly horses, dogs and stags. He was one of Queen Victoria's favourite artists and she commissioned numerous paintings from him. He was also the sculptor of the lions in Trafalgar Square, London. John Burnet (1784 - 1868) was a Scottish engraver and painter.The original painting is in the Tate Gallery, London.Acid free mount.
