[s.l.] : Ioannes Sadler [fe]cit et excudit, cum Privilegio S.C.M., [circa 1590]. Duodecimo (112 x 70 mm), copper engraved single sheet mounted on later marbled paper backing; in Latin; handling wear, a tiny amount of text loss at the extremities. The printer and engraver Jan (Johannes) Sadeler I (Brussels 1550 - 1600/1601 Venice) was a member of the famous Sadeler dynasty of Flemish engravers who were dominant in Northern European printmaking in the later sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. He was active in a number of centres across the Holy Roman Empire, including Antwerp, Cologne, Venice, Verona, Rome and Munich, where he was a court engraver between 1588-1595. In 1581 he received the imperial privilege; this was renewed in 1593. As part of the imprint at the foot of the text this is mentioned after the printer's name in the standard phrase 'cum Privilegio S[ac]. C[ae]. M[aes].'. Manuscript in ink written on 2 sides of a quarto bifolium, 240 x 185 mm; dated at Paris, 18 August 1831, and signed at the foot 'De Sainson, painter du voyage de l'Astrolabe, rue St. André des arts 55', the letter is addressed to 'monsieur le Baron'; de Sainson writes to ensure that a promise obtained from King Louis-Philippe in favour of his father, geographical engineer Louis-Pierre de Sainson (1764-1845), is honoured; the letter is extremely well preserved. 'Au mois de juin dernier, le Roi ayant daigné m'accorder une audience, je lui remis une demande par laquelle mon père, chef de bataillon commandant de place, sur le point de solliciter sa retraite, suppliait Sa Majesté de lui accorder un emploi dans l'une de ses possessions Royales sans aucun traitement sur la liste civile ; sa retraite et ses moyens personnels suffisant à son existence. A very early depiction of French explorers in the virgin equatorial landscape of Island Melanesia, painted by Louis-Auguste de Sainson, the official voyage artist on Dumont d'Urville's famous 1826-29 expedition in the Astrolabe.   From a historical perspective, this painting is of great significance as a rare example of early nineteenth-century Pacific voyage art. Colour map, 580 x 370 mm (sheet); scale 1: 500,000; with an inset map of Southern Palestine, and border decoration based on Old Testament-period motifs; in very fine condition, folding into the original grey wrappers, 190 x 110 mm, the front with an illustration of Abraham's oak at Hebron, and with the original owner's name D. Thompson in the top margin; a printed correction slip to the inside of the lower wrapper notes that 'Some of the identifications are controversial'; a lovely example of a rare map.

This beautiful volume of soundscape compositions, images and words from Philip Samartzis is an invitation to share in a remarkable journey of enquiry. Antarctica is a paradox of the sublime and prosaic: with its vast expanses of ice, snow and mountains - and traces of human habitation, from weathered huts to abandoned machinery. Samartzis travelled south with the Australian Antarctic Division on several occasions and his recordings of the unique sounds of Antarctica have been used to create soundscape compositions which are meticulously realised on three CDs of the music included in this book.

Newspaper notices from the 1870s inform us that Samuel Samuels was a pioneer settler in the Ahaura district of Westland. Like many others, he had arrived during the West Coast gold rush and had been involved in gold mining ventures. By 1917, when Samuels wrote both of these letters to one of his nephews (in Australia?), he was probably one of the oldest residents in the township of Ahaura, situated at the junction of the Ahaura and Grey Rivers. His letters provide a small insight into the life of Jewry on the West Coast of the South Island during World War One. 1. A superb set of the octavo editions of Saurin's monumental Bible commentary with engraved illustrations by B. Picart, Jonkman, Wandelaar, Pool and Otten. Although not as lavishly illustrated as the better known six-volume folio edition (La Haye : Pierre de Hondt, 1728-1739), the octavo editions are rarely found as a complete ten-volume set.
