Description:
[s.l.] : Ioannes Sadler [fe]cit et excudit, cum Privilegio S.C.M., [circa 1590]. Duodecimo (112 x 70 mm), copper engraved single sheet mounted on later marbled paper backing; in Latin; handling wear, a tiny amount of text loss at the extremities. The printer and engraver Jan (Johannes) Sadeler I (Brussels 1550 - 1600/1601 Venice) was a member of the famous Sadeler dynasty of Flemish engravers who were dominant in Northern European printmaking in the later sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. He was active in a number of centres across the Holy Roman Empire, including Antwerp, Cologne, Venice, Verona, Rome and Munich, where he was a court engraver between 1588-1595. In 1581 he received the imperial privilege; this was renewed in 1593. As part of the imprint at the foot of the text this is mentioned after the printer's name in the standard phrase 'cum Privilegio S[ac]. C[ae]. M[aes].'. This rare ephemeral printing was produced by Sadeler at the height of the Counter-Reformation, possibly around 1590…

Description:
Manuscript in ink written on 2 sides of a quarto bifolium, 240 x 185 mm; dated at Paris, 18 August 1831, and signed at the foot 'De Sainson, painter du voyage de l'Astrolabe, rue St. André des arts 55', the letter is addressed to 'monsieur le Baron'; de Sainson writes to ensure that a promise obtained from King Louis-Philippe in favour of his father, geographical engineer Louis-Pierre de Sainson (1764-1845), is honoured; the letter is extremely well preserved.

Description:
Watercolour and ink on paper, 398 x 287 mm (entire sheet); contemporary inscription in ink to verso: 80. Vue du grand torrent et d'une forêt / Hâvre Carteret; the artist's own re-worked section (80 x 110 mm, irregular) carefully pasted on at lower left; short closed tear at right edge; extremely well preserved. A very early depiction of French explorers in the virgin equatorial landscape of Island Melanesia, painted by Louis-Auguste de Sainson, the official voyage artist on Dumont d'Urville's famous 1826-29 expedition in the Astrolabe. From a historical perspective, this painting is of great significance as a rare example of early nineteenth-century Pacific voyage art. More specifically, its rarity is underlined by the fact that there are no finished watercolours by de Sainson held in public collections in either Australia or New Zealand. Despite the best efforts of David Scott Mitchell, Sir William Dixson and Rex Nan Kivell - the latter of whom 'at one stage spent 35 years tracking down a…

Description:
Melbourne : Thames & Hudson, 2016. Oblong quarto, illustrated laminated boards, pp. 192, illustrated, with two accompanying CDs contain electroacoustic composition, soundscapes, and recordings by Philip Samartzis. As new copy. This beautiful volume of soundscape compositions, images and words from Philip Samartzis is an invitation to share in a remarkable journey of enquiry. Antarctica is a paradox of the sublime and prosaic: with its vast expanses of ice, snow and mountains - and traces of human habitation, from weathered huts to abandoned machinery. Samartzis travelled south with the Australian Antarctic Division on several occasions and his recordings of the unique sounds of Antarctica have been used to create soundscape compositions which are meticulously realised on three CDs of the music included in this book.

Description:
Newspaper notices from the 1870s inform us that Samuel Samuels was a pioneer settler in the Ahaura district of Westland. Like many others, he had arrived during the West Coast gold rush and had been involved in gold mining ventures. By 1917, when Samuels wrote both of these letters to one of his nephews (in Australia?), he was probably one of the oldest residents in the township of Ahaura, situated at the junction of the Ahaura and Grey Rivers. His letters provide a small insight into the life of Jewry on the West Coast of the South Island during World War One. 1. Ahaura [no date, but probably 1916 or 1917]. 2 pp, quarto, headed 'Ahaura', and signed at the foot 'Sam. Samuels, Ahaura, Grey Valley, West Coast, New Zealand'; original folds; complete and legible. The letter discusses 'the scarcity of things' on the West Coast, and the high prices of various commodities, including even local produce; all of the young men are 'at the War, a great many coming back crippled, not able to do any work at the…

Description:
London : Thames and Hudson Ltd, 2020. Quarto, boards in dustjacket, pp. 304, illustrated. New copy. A vibrant visual history of one of the most powerful, memorable and effective means of mass communication: the poster. Even in the digital age, the printed poster retains an important, much-loved role in connecting with audiences in a way that both entertains and informs. The V&A was one of the first museums to start collecting posters and to recognize the importance of doing so. Far from ephemeral, posters are both a representation of the time in which they were produced and distributed and, in many instances, have shaped the societies in which they were seen. The story of the poster is both one of changing styles and new innovations in design, illustration and printing, and a visually compelling social history. The Poster brings together over 300 examples that tell a comprehensive visual history of poster design and the various ways the poster has been used to tell, to sell, to charm and to spur on…
